Robert Elsworth Stein
Robert Elsworth Stein of Waverly died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, at Coffey County Hospital in Burlington. He was 85.
Mr. Stein was a Southern Baptist minister, working 42 years in the ministry in many locations in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico. After he retired, he and his wife, Ruth, managed a trailer park in Clearwater, Fla., before they moved to Waverly. He lived the last years of his life at Sunset Manor in Waverly.
The son of Samuel L. and Sarah E. Campbell Stein, he was born Jan. 26, 1921, at Derry, Pa. When he was 2, the family moved to California where he grew up. He graduated fromhigh school at San Bernadino and in May 1942 enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served during World War II on the USS Melville until he received an honorable medical discharge in December 1943. He was awarded the Honorable Service Button. He attended Baptist Theological Seminary and Bible Baptist Seminary at Fort Worth, Texas, and received his master of theology.
He married Ruth N. Beasley on Jan. 16, 1944, at Princeton. She died Jan. 15, 2006.
Mr. Stein is survived by two daughters, Diana Isle of Waverly and Cynthia Cottrell of Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers, Dick Stein of Newport, Ore., and Pat Stein of Bandon, Ore.; one sister, Eileen Schrempp of Calimesa, Calif.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandsons. A sister, Elinor Boyd, died earlier.
Mr. Stein was cremated, with no services planned. Inurnment will be at a later date in Waverly Cemetery.
