Elizabeth R. ‘Betty’ Geist Rose

The funeral for Elizabeth R. “Betty” Rose will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Bob Colerick of the church will conduct the service. Burial will be at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions to Hand in Hand Hospice or the Emporia State University Foundation may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 175, Emporia, KS 66801.
Mrs. Rose died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006, at her home in Emporia after a brief battle with cancer. She was 80.
She was a pre-school and elementary teacher and, later, director of the Children’s Developmental Center at Butcher School. She also, with her husband, Marcellus Rose, and his brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Naomi Rose, owned and operated Rose Brothers Grocery for 37 years.
The daughter of Walter and Ceola King Geist, she was born March 31, 1926, in Quincy. She graduated from Eureka High School in 1944. She moved to Emporia to attend Kansas State Teachers College, where she graduated in 1948 with a teaching degree. She received her master’s degree in 1982.
She married Marcellus E. “Mark” Rose on Nov. 15, 1948, in Emporia. He died Sept. 24, 1991.
Mrs. Rose was a member of the First Christian Church. She was active in many clubs and organizations, include the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
She is survived by a son, Walter Rose of Topeka; and five grandchildren.
Her daughter, Carolyn Rose Brown, died Dec. 13, 1999.
