John Franklin Lynn

The service for John Franklin Lynn will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Patio Garden of Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Lee Hoskins of the First United Methodist Church will conduct the service. Services also will be conducted by American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Lowry-Funston Post 1980. The family will meet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions to H. Dale Buck Animal Welfare Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 175, Emporia, KS 66801.
Mr. Lynn died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at his home, 720 Chestnut St. He was 85.
He was a mechanic for Toms Motor Company in Emporia for 20 years before he retired 40 years ago. He was a private first class serving as an anti-tank gun crewman in the 137th Infantry of the U.S. Army during World War II. He served overseas for one year and three months and 20 days and fought in battles at Normandy, northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and central Europe. He walked into Germany during the invasion.
The son of George William and Bertha Reber Lynn, he was born March 4, 1921, at Holliday in Johnson County. He attended Shawnee Mission North Rural High School in Shawnee.
Mr. Lynn was a member of the First Baptist Church. He also was a member of American Legion Post 5 and VFW Post 1980.
He is survived by two nephews, Jerry Wayne Hartenbower of Emporia and John Giles Hartenbower of Colleyville, Texas; and two nieces, Elaine Le Karr of Emporia and Dolores Ann Jacob of Reading. A sister, Leone Marie Hartenbower, died earlier.
