Virgil W. Bugbee

Virgil W. Bugbee, 1218 E. Ninth Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at the Holiday Resort care center. He was 89.
Mr. Bugbee and his wife, Martha, owned and operated the Emporia Motel at Sixth Avenue and Peyton Street for 30 years. He retired 28 years ago. He and his wife also delivered Meals on Wheels for 10 years. He was a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, entering service in the Field Artillery and serving the Quarter Master Corps at the time of his discharge from the service.
The son of Charles E. and Ila A. Totton Bugbee, he was born July 2, 1917, at Emporia. He graduated from the Emporia Business College.
He married Martha Drummond on Oct. 4, 1942, at the Grace United Methodist Church. She survives.
Mr. Bugbee was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He also was a member of American Legion Ball McColm Post 5.
He is also survived by one daughter, Barbara Christiani of Emporia; one brother, Clarence Bugbee of Vermillion, S.D.; and two grandsons. A sister, Velma Cochennet; and a brother, William Bugbee, died earlier.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Mic McGuire will conduct the service. Burial, with service conducted by American Legion Post 5 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Lowry-Funston Post 1980, will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
The family suggests that, instead of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the church or Hand in Hand Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 175, Emporia, KS 66801.
