George Daniel McCallum, STRONG CITY

The memorial service to celebrate the life of George Daniel “Dan” McCallum of Strong City will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home in Cottonwood Falls. Mr. McCallum was cremated. The Rev. John Hastings will conduct the service. Burial will be in Elmdale Cemetery at Elmdale.
Memorial contributions to the St. Anthony’s Renovation Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 201 Cherry, Cottonwood Falls, KS 66845.
Mr. McCallum died Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, at Via Christ-St. Francis Health System in Wichita. He was 71.
He was a jailer at the Chase County Detention Center. Previously, he was county agent for Chautaqua County, worked at the Elmdale Elevator, farmed at Elmdale, worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and was dispatcher for the Chase County Sheriff’s Office, EMS and fire departments. He and his wife, Mary Ann, also drove the transportation bus to deliver meals and people to and from the Senior Center.
The son of George Alexander and Pearl Young McCallum, he was born April 10, 1935, at Emporia. He graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan with a bachelor’s degree in agronomy.
He married Donna Stephenson and they were later divorced. He married Mary Ann Waner Horst on July 17, 1976, at Strong City. She survives.
Mr. McCallum was a member of the Elmdale United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the Cottonwood Falls County Club and the KSU Alumni Association.
He is also survived by two sons, Randy McCallum of Mahaska and Steven McCallum of Manhattan; two daughters, Suzann Smith of Winfield and Tamra Dietrick of Topeka; two stepsons, Mike Horst and Dan Horst, both of Elmdale; four stepdaughters, Gracia Winter of Wichita, Theresa Ross of Newton, Christine Potter of Lenexa and Donna Clark of Bell Buckle, Tenn.; two brothers, Bruce McCallum of Manhattan and Richard McCallum of Bristol, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren; two adopted grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A brother, Roger McCallum, died earlier.
