Thelma Spielman
Thelma Spielman of Lebo died Sunday Oct. 1, 2006, at the Coffey County Hospital in Burlington. She was 90.
Mrs. Spielman worked for 27 years in Dr. K.R. Hunter’s office in Lebo. She and her husband moved to Lebo in 1942, where they lived with the exception of two years in Pittsburg, where she worked at Mount Carmel Hospital and took several nursing classes. They then returned to Lebo.
The daughter of Orlie Ray and Rosela Mull Shaffer, she was born May 23, 1916, at Ada. She moved at the age of three with her family to a farm near Waverly. They later moved to Halls Summit and she joined the Halls Summit Methodist Church. She attended Waverly High School.
She married Fred F. Ireland on Aug. 20, 1935, at Topeka. He died in November 1977. She married Loren “Leo” Spielman on Feb. 12, 1979, at Baldwin. After retirement, they spent time traveling and wintered in Texas and Arizona. In Texas, they did volunteer mission work at the Mission Children’s Home. He died Aug. 13, 1998.
Mrs. Spielman was a member of the Lebo United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Lucky 13 Club, American Legion Auxiliary and several square dance clubs.
She is survived by a daughter, Doris Ireland Vaughn, three grandsons; and eight great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Floyd Shaffer and Ray Shaffer; and one sister, Una Lira, died earlier.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Lebo United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery at Lebo. The family will meet friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home in Lebo.
