Positives about education

Thursday, Feb. 9, 11:51 a.m. by John E. Peterson, Special to the Gazette

In my last column, I wrote about a few of my concerns about education. That made me think that I also have some thoughts about good things in education. It also brought up more concerns. Consequently, I am motivated to chat about education again. Read story.

Vaccinations are Important

Saturday, Feb. 4, 4:54 p.m. by Ashley Walker

A recent outbreak of scarlet fever around Emporia and an even more recent outbreak of whooping cough in Manhattan makes it hard to defend a bill that was brought before the Kansas legislature a couple weeks ago asking to widen the exemptions for childhood vaccines to include a parent or guardian’s personal belief. Thank you, Dr. Ace

Friday, Feb. 3, 2:24 p.m. by Teresa Ajello

Now that Dr. Ace has retired I was thinking back on how we met. It was about 33 years ago and I was just out of high school. My dear Mom had been taking us kids to another dentist in another town who apparently wasn’t doing a very good job, as after my first checkup with Dr. Ace I was scheduled for five one-hour appointments. Talk about daunting. As it ended up, five weren’t enough to get all of the work done. Well we’ve been together ever since. Read story.

The People’s Petition

Thursday, Feb. 2, 12:07 p.m. by Phil Dillon, Emporia

Emporia has twenty-three Lyon Countians circulating the petition to put the “extension decision” on the ballot. We’ve been out and about¸ engaging in a labor of love. Over the past week or so we’ve met a lot of wonderful folks. Like us, they understand that the right to petition our leaders is precious. Our Founding Fathers weren’t given this right. They had to earn in. When they’d earned that right for themselves, they enshrined it for every future American generation. We intend to do our part to honor them and to honor our fellow citizens. We will meet the goal and the issue will then be decided at the ballot box. Read story.
