Fanestil Meats held a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday at the location of their new retail shop and warehouse, Fanestil Meats Fresh Local Market, on W. U.S. Highway 50 just west of the Americus Road. Stocked with processed meats, cheese and other local foods of all varieties, the new location has allowed for business expansion.

Dan Smoots, owner of Fanestil Meats, expressed much thanks to all who helped him get to this point, including employees, bankers, and the 27 local contractors and suppliers who have helped with the new facility.

“We got here with our employees,” said Smoots.

Fanestil Meats employs over 90 staff, and several of them have worked for Fanestil for over 25 years.

“It’s taken the help of great banks, great supports, great employees. I can’t say enough about the great customers we have. We have the absolute most wonderful customers you could possibly imagine. They’re so loyal,” said Smoots.

Providing meat for many retailers, food service companies, state fairs and several locals, Fanestil has become well known for their quality meats. One product that is especially reputable is Fanestil’s Party Time Ham.

“We sell enough Party Time Ham to feed about 5,000 people every day,” said Smoots.

Danny Giefer, mayor of Emporia, believes that the new location will help bring more people to the Emporia area.

“We’re excited about getting them moved over here. It’s a good entry in from our west side of town,” said Giefer.

The distribution center is just the first phase of a two-phase process. The next endeavor for the business will be a 40,000-square-foot building just to the west of the distribution center that will serve as a production center.

“It’s been an unbelievable effort. Three years ago this was prairie grass,” Smoots said as he stood on the sidewalk outside the 22,000-square-foot facility.

Fanestil’s Fresh Local Market is now open to the public on Mondays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
