Volunteers from Anchor Masonic Lodge No. 224 are coordinating a free cancer screening event in partnership with Midwest Cancer Alliance and physicians from University of Kansas Medical Center. It is one of 20 free cancer screening events the Kansas Masonic Foundation is sponsoring across the Heartland in 2018.
The event is 9 a.m. - noon in the Community Building on 408 Pearson Ave. in Waverly. The event is open to the public and will include free skin and prostate cancer screenings, colon cancer home screening kits as well as Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments and breath tests that measure lung exposure to carbon monoxide.
In addition, Diagnostic Imaging Center mammography services will be available. The cost of a mammogram is covered for those who qualify through the Early Detection Works program or have insurance coverage. Otherwise, a fee may apply. Participants can call 913-344-9989 to learn more or to schedule a mammogram for July 14.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 9,500 Americans are diagnosed with some form of skin cancer every day and nearly 250 of those are diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The Centers for Disease Control reports that, in Kansas, cancer is currently the second leading cause of death and the region has higher than average rates of skin cancer, compared to other parts of the U.S.
“When it comes to the possibility of cancer, it’s always better to catch a potential problem in the earliest stage possible,” said dermatologist Rachel Pflederer, M.D.
This event marks the first time Masonic Lodge No. 224 has hosted a cancer screening. “These free, lifesaving services are available to everyone,” says Masonic volunteer, Gregg Clarkson. “Whether you’re a life-long neighbor or an out-of-town visitor, our doors are open.”
“The physicians are catching potential health issues in about 20% of the people they are seeing at the screenings,” notes Robert Shively, Director of KMF. Anyone identified with a possible health issue is advised by the screening team to see their local physician.
