Madison boys rally for 49-46 win over Burlingame

Saturday, January 28, 2012

The Madison boys were down but definitely not out.

The Bulldogs trailed by four with 1:18 to play, but a 7-0 rally to finish the game gave them a 49-46 win over Burlingame Friday night at White Auditorium.

“They get used to winning in football and that’s something that’s carried over to basketball,” Madison coach Lance Tally said. “They’re competitors and five of our seniors are the guys who played the whole fourth quarter. And they were all just making whatever play they needed to, especially defensively.”

Trailing by four, Kole Schankie’s field goal cut it to two with 51.5 to play. Madison then stole the inbounds pass, and Collin Kile was fouled on a layup. Kile made the first free throw and missed the second. But Madison got the rebound, and Tanner Bybee scored to give the Bulldogs the lead.

Schankie then stole the ball at the other end, and after a foul Tyler Williams made two free throws with 18.3 seconds to play. Burlingame had two cracks at it in the final seconds but couldn’t connect.

“We stepped it up with the pressure and got some steals and some easy baskets,” Tally said. “It was great to see a couple of our seniors hit free throws down the stretch to put the game in our favor.”

The top-seeded Bulldogs led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter, and upped their lead to nine early in the second quarter. But fourth-seeded Burlingame went on a 13-4 run to close the half and tie it at 23-all at halftime.

Burlingame’s 6-foot-7 Wes Lang (10 points) and 6-6 Austin Prescott (14 points) gave Madison problems inside and the Bulldogs trailed 33-27 midway through the third quarter.

But Tally credited tough defense by Bubba Smith and Schankie for keeping Madison in it.

“Bubba Smith was working his tail off all night,” Tally said. “He was out-sized by at least four inches getting the rebounds and Kole Schankie had the job of guarding (BHS point guard) Parker Lee all night. But top to bottom we played really good as a team tonight.”

Three-pointers by Kile and Williams brought Madison back to within a bucket at 35-33 with 2:05 remaining in the third. Burlingame added a field goal in the final minute to take a 37-33 lead heading into the fourth.

Williams hit a trey from the corner and was fouled with 3:44 to go. His four-point play cut the deficit to 41-40.

“He hit one almost exactly like that at their place to tie the game with a minute left, but we weren’t able to come away with a win there,” Tally said of Williams. “But he steps up and makes big plays for us.”

Williams led Madison with 15 points and Kile added 14. Schankie and Bybee had eight apiece.
