EAC Birthday Party

The Emporia Arts Center invites the public to a birthday party from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday to celebrate the first anniversary of the new facility. There will be refreshments, and painter Richard Slimon will be on hand to discuss his exhibit in the Trusler Gallery.

The EAC is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at 815 Commercial St.

Electric Puppetry at EAC

The next item on the Emporia Arts Council’s public performance schedule is a pair of fables acted by a unique and extraordinary puppet troupe, CORBIAN and Lightwire Theater.

The electroluminescent wire puppets and props are three dimensional and brought to life by three performers who are dressed in full black. Each glow-in-the-dark story features classical and contemporary music ranging from jazz to pop. View a video at www.corbianarts.com.

The Ugly Duckling’s adventures lead him on a search for others who will love him for who he is. The famous story of the race between the Tortoise and the Hare is best known today for teaching the moral that “slow and steady wins the race.”

Tickets are available at the EAC, the Granada Coffee Co., Sweet Granada and Emporia Fitness. Adults are $15, youth $10 and a limited number of free tickets have been set aside for Emporia State students (available at the ESU Memorial Union ticket office).

The life of a pioneer woman

The Eastmoor United Methodist Church in Marion will celebrate Kansas Day with a pioneer lunch and a performance by Ann Birney of Ride Into History, who will portray Julia Archibald Holmes. Holmes traveled the Santa Fe Trail and was the first white woman to climb Pike’s Peak.

The meal is $10 and reservations are required. Please call Janet Bryant at (620) 382-3418.

Soprano Andrea Garritano will give a recital of aria and songbook favorites at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3 in Heath Recital Hall, Beach Music Hall, on the campus of Emporia State University. Admission is $5; $4 for seniors and students.
