Federal inspectors to visit Wolf Creek
Federal inspectors will visit the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant next week to determine why an offsite power loss caused an automatic shutdown at the plant.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Wednesday that it will send a six-member team to the plant near Burlington. The NRC declared its lowest of four emergency classifications on Jan. 13 when a main generator electrical breaker tripped, causing a power outage. The NRC says emergency generators automatically provided power to safety-related equipment and there were no radiological releases during the shutdown. The NRC team will work with two inspectors who are at Wolf Creek fulltime.
Kansas Day at Red Rocks
A scavenger hunt, Kansas Trivia games, cookie decorating and an open house are planned for Kansas Day activities from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the William Allen White State Historic Site and Visitor Center, 927 Exchange St. Docents will be on hand to answer questions about the house and White, who died on Kansas Day in 1944. A $50 Shop Emporia gift certificate will be awarded as the top prize in the scavenger hunt. Authors Jerilynn Henrikson of Emporia and Beverley Buller of Newton each have donated a copy of a children’s book as prizes for the contest. Buller, a long-time educator, has written children’s books on both White and his daughter, Mary, who died while horseback riding. She received a Kansas Notable Book Award in 2011 for “A Prairie Peter Pan: The Mary White Story.”
Admission and refreshments are free, but donations will be accepted. The event was organized by Darla Mallein, White partnership board member.
