The Eastmoor United Methodist Church in Marion will celebrate Kansas Day with a pioneer lunch and a performance by Ann Birney of Ride Into History, who will portray Julia Archibald Holmes. Holmes traveled the Santa Fe Trail and was the first white woman to climb Pike’s Peak.

The meal is $10 and reservations are required. Please call Janet Bryant at (620) 382-3418.

Students wanted for Safety Conference

Students in high school or college with an interest in transportation safety are invited to apply for scholarships to the Kansas Transportation Safety Conference scheduled for April 17 - 18 in Topeka.

All scholarships cover conference registration fee only, with the exception of those who must travel at least 60 miles to attend (who may apply for hotel accommodation as well). Student groups active in transportation safety advocacy are especially encouraged to apply and attend. Contact Steve Halbett with KDOT for a descriptive flyer and an application form at halbett@ksdot.org or (785) 296-3756.

Telephone pole repair at post office

Westar Energy will be repairing a telephone pole in the alley behind the post office on Jan. 26. The collection boxes will be blocked all day. People will need to come inside the post office to drop off their mail, Emporia Postmaster Aaron Napier said. He apologizes for the inconvenience.
