Reduce meat consumption

Friday, January 20, 2012

2011 has not been a good year for the meat industry.

There were more reports of devastating health impacts. In May, the World Cancer Research Fund advises limiting meat consumption to reduce the risk of bowel cancer. The August issue of The Lancet projects that, on the current meat-based diet, half of the U.S. population will be obese by 2030.

Last August, salmonella contamination forced world largest meat processor, Cargill, to recall 36 million pounds of ground turkey. The University of Florida places the national financial burden of pathogens in meat products at $4 billion.

Then there were cruelty exposés. A March undercover investigation of the E6 Cattle Company in Texas showed workers bashing cows’ heads with pickaxes and hammers. In November, ABC News publicized atrocious egg production conditions at Iowa’s Sparboe Farms. Bills attempting to criminalize such investigations were defeated in Iowa, Minnesota, Florida, and New York.

Accordingly, the USDA projects that Americans will consume 12.2 percent less meat in 2012 than in 2007.

Every one of us can welcome this trend by resolving to cut our meat consumption in 2012. Entering “live vegan” in our favorite search engine brings recipes and tons of other useful information.

People are not fat because of meat, they are fat because of lack of exercise and poor diet. Please do eat less meat so I can get mine cheaper!

That's right, goodoleboy. It is an imbalance of calorie intake vs. calories burned. Fast foods and pre-packaged foods are also more calorie dense than plain old hamburger or steak. I also wonder how much all the preservatives being put in food is causing all the health problems we are seeing today. Also with all the mechanization we have today, people do not have to work as hard as the used to as a general rule. I remember mom telling about her grandfather having to have the butter (not margarine) dish next to his plate when he was eating bread. Each bite of bread included a pad of butter...And he lived to be 100.

Moderation is the key, particularly with regard to red meats and processed meats like sausage, ham, bologna, etc. Hot dogs are a real culprit because of nitrites.

Also, be sure to eat a high fibre diet so the stuff doesn't sit in your colon for long periods of time.

I urge any of you stubborn ones to google "colon cancer and red meat consumption." The studies might surprise many who are crowing about the merits of high red meat consumption. Lots of warning for you.

People in the U.S. have a very high incidence of colon cancer. Any idea why?

Look at the palm of your hand. Just the palm, please, not your entire hand. Your meat portion should not exceed that size.

Still hungry? Baked white potatoes have recently been highlighted as being high in fibre and more nutritious than once thought to be. Just limit the butter and sour cream.

Still hungry? How about a raw salad with lots of legumes like garbanzo beans or white beans? Limit that ranch dressing everyone in the midwest adores. LIMIT cheese too.

Eat more chicken. The dark meat is better for you according to recent studies. Broiled or baked or stewed but NOT FRIED.

If you are in your early 50's, get a colonoscopy. Better safe than sorry. Once every ten years is a good idea.

I was going to suggest maybe they should have confirmed that the person who submitted this is truly who they claim to be. After all, we have to so we can post our opinions on here.
