Petition Could Force A Question On The Ballot

Friday, January 6, 2012

For those opposed to yesterday’s approval of the resolution to allow Lyon County Extension to join the Frontier Extension District, there is one avenue of recourse.

The resolution will be published twice in the coming days. The second publication will set off a 60-day protest period during which opponents of the resolution can circulate a petition to force the question onto the ballot for the Aug. 7 primary.

The petition must contain the signatures of 5 percent of registered voters in the county. According to County Clerk Tammy Vopat, that number is 990.

“But those names must be valid and confirmed, so we suggest trying to get a couple hundred more,” Vopat said. The names on the petition will be validated by the county clerk’s office.

Wording of the petition must appear exactly as it will on the ballot, and must be approved by County Attorney Marc Goodman.

“The language has to be prepared by the protest group, and the question submitted,” Goodman said. “That’s what the county attorney rules on, is if the question is sufficient.”

To Vopat’s knowledge, no petition drive has been organized yet.

Let's get this drive started. This issue should go before voters in August. Martin and Waters just can't be trusted anymore. I hope they know how much support their losing the next time they're up for re-election.

I don' t care what anyone says and thinks . Noone, absolutely noone, should have " UNLIMITED TAXING AUTHORITY " and that includes individuals, Commissions/Comissioners
, Extension Districts or Governments/Governing Bodies/Entities !!

It seems to me that there is a serious lack of " Thoughtful Thinkers, Planners and Studiers " on both the City and County Commissions . And plenty of " DO AS I WANT, WISH OR SAY PUPPETS " on both Commissions .

If I sound upset and angry, well it is probably because I am ! It would seem that the only thing, we the taxpayers of Emporia and Lyon County have to look forward to is " paying more taxes " and " Keeping Less of Our Earned Money " for our own personal needs !

Common sense tells me that an " UNLIMITED TAXING AUTHORITY " also means an " UNLIMITED SPENDING AUTHORITY " ! Think about it

The KVOE web site poll says 45 people are in favor of a petition.
9 are not in favor.

How can 9 people in our area think that the public voting on this is a bad idea?

The Gazette poll, (which cannot be right), asks if we approve of the commission doing this without a public vote, is a good idea.

344 NO
55 YES

IF a petition is started for a public vote on this issue, the first people to be asked to sign it should be those working at the extension office and all three county commissioners.

That way will all know how they feel about our democratic process.

Steve, I'm sure the people voting NO are those associated with commission members. People don't always vote the straight issue; they vote for their friend on a commission or for whom their spouse tells them, or for a particular party. Democracy in action, right?

Either that or they can't read well enough to read the question correctly.

BTW, Steve, there are openings on Community Corrections Advisory Board if you'd like to be a member and learn how budget cuts are killing us in law enforcement. Call Robert Sullivan at Community Corrections, 341-3294.

Community Corrections Advisory Board meets at noon for one hour in the basement of the courthouse, once a month on the second Tuesday. If there are no items on the agenda that require a board vote, the director is considerate enough to cancel meetings far enough in advance as to prevent personal scheduling mess ups.

Who is it again, that owns KVOE and could this be one of the 9 people, who are not in favor of a petition ? I personally know of a lot more than 45 people who are in favor of a petition forcing a vote on this issue. And a number of those I know are prominent citizens of both the County and City !
The biggest problem, is not getting petition signer's, but getting people who are opposed to this issue to turn out and vote on this issue !

I think we all know that our Government' s are having " Funding " problems. I also think that we all know or should know that our Government' s " Funding and Funding Cut Back " problems are due to the wanton, uneeded, unnecessary spending that " We --the taxpayers -- have allowed to happen for decades .
That being said, there is absolutely no reason for " Us -- the taxpayers -- to sit on our " Arses " and continue to allow the spending and taxing to continually " Spiral " upward, while we, the taxpayers are continually expected to pay more and higher taxes and " tighten our belts and " CUT BACK " !

All I can say is, if a petition is drafted to sign, those who are opposed to Lyon County joining the Frontier Extension District and having " UNLIMITED TAXING AUTHORITY " and quite possibly " Unlimited SPENDING authority " , get off your " Arses ", sign the petition and for the sake of all of us, VOTE NO on the issue if and when it is brought to a vote of the electorate .

methusla,

I would imagine that Steve Sauder would back the democratic process and sign the petition if and when it comes out.

Maybe someone will ask him on the KVOE wed. chat show?

And as the wording of the petition or ballot question is not set yet, please don't say vote "NO" just yet. The wording COULD be set to require a yes vote to overturn this decision.

got your point though, we need to get voters energized
