Tuition breaks for Veterans

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

There is an interesting piece of legislation that was introduced by Kansas House Minority Leader Paul Davis that would let military veterans qualify for in-state tuition to Kansas educational institutions.

The bill would allow all honorably discharged veterans who served at least 36 months on active duty to be treated as in-state residents even if they didn’t fit the current rules.

With tens of thousands of veterans returning home to the United States after risking their lives serving our country overseas we hope this legislation will pass easily and without much debate.

As military veterans work to integrate back into society it is opportunities like this that can make a tremendous difference in their lives.

Emporia is the founding city of veterans day, and it would only make sense that our community voice our support for this bill.

Many years ago the Kansas Legislature passed a law allowing illegal immigrants to receive in-state tuition. Right now there are 500 illegal immigrants receiving in-state tuition and it is crazy to think that the same benefit cannot be had by military veterans who served their country.

Allowing veterans to receive in-state tuition is a small way the Kansas Legislature can honor our veterans.

Outing standing! Glad see this Real shame that illegals could get cheaper rates than veterans. The legislaturers should be a shame of themselves to allow illegals to get better deals than ones protecting our country!

Sound words indeed! Now let all of us Emporians e-mail our reps and other reps in the state house to vote yes on this important bill. I'm going to send my e-mail right now. Coming from Emporia, the founding city of Veterans' Day, those e-mails would be most appropriate.

An absolute disgrace that countless illegal immigrants get tuition breaks...free healthcare....while our fighting men and women go without. So much for being a citizen, let alone serving your country.

Oh for crying out loud, why not take a pro active approach and just e-mail your reps to vote for this bill, especially since it would benefit our own E-State. Christ!
