Emporia Living Magazine shows off Emporia

A new magazine for Emporia is being delivered to doorsteps around town this week. The 80-page, full-color, glossy magazine is called Emporia Living and it’s a new product from The Emporia Gazette.
The magazine is packed with articles and photographs of some of the unique businesses and individuals in the community, all illustrating “friends and neighbors who make Emporia a great place to live, work and play,” Emporia Gazette Publisher Chris Walker said.
“We’re excited to be able to give Emporia a high-quality product showcasing the diversity and strength of our community and the people in it,” Walker said.
The magazine is being distributed free to every house in Emporia. Fourteen thousand copies have been printed and as of Tuesday morning, approximately 75 percent of the distribution had been completed, according to Brenda Armitage, circulation manager.
“Producing a glossy magazine has been on our drawing board for many years, but the timing never seemed right,” Walker said. “With things looking bright for 2012, we thought this would be the year.”
The project spanned several months in the making, with Gazette advertising staff taking on responsibility for selling magazine ads. Newsroom staff members, supplemented with a few freelance writers, produced the articles that fill the magazine, with the photography being done by acclaimed local photographer Casey Wilson.
The production department’s graphic designers worked long into the nights and on weekends to put together the ads, design the magazine and lay it out for printing. Those designers did the lion’s share of the work and received accolades from Walker.
“They had a big challenge,” he said, “because we wanted the product to look like a magazine and not a newspaper.”
When the product came off the presses, Walker said he was more than satisfied with the aesthetic results and the content as well.
“I think readers will love it, too,” he said. “The magazine is not just the culmination of perhaps the largest project we’ve ever undertaken, it is a reflection and representation of the many strengths of the city, people and businesses. Emporia and its people are something we can all take pride in.”
Armitage is still hiring a few additional people to deliver the magazine, and is hoping distribution will be completed by the end of the week. People interested in delivering copies may call her at 342-4800.
Those who want extra copies of the magazine may purchase them at The Gazette office, The Town Crier, Emporia Main Street, the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce, or free copies will be available at the advertising sponsors.
It has not been determined how many issues of Emporia Living will be produced a year — whether it is one or two — but “We are already working on ideas for our second issue,” Walker said.
“If you like the magazine please let the advertisers know. It’s their support that made the magazine possible for us to produce this for the community.” Walker said.

I got the magazine today, nice quality, good articles, superb pictures, however half of the magazine are ads, I wouldn't call that a 80 page magazine. Congrats anyway.

And yes, I realized is thanks to those ads the magazine is free, to me is simply too much advertisement.

Felt if was a very slick looking mag! and Caseys photos were outstanding as always! But also more ads than stories and this made it look cheap

Tourguide:
Come by the Gazette and pick one up.
Matt: you can see an online version of the magazine at http://www.emporiaksliving.com but it is not mobile friendly yet.
Also you have been asking about a Gazette App and we should have it available in the next month. We have been testing the App on android and apple.
Thanks
Chris

I wish someone would tell that to a few on my street that bending is good exercise. They wait till it blow into my yard. But I guess they are doing me a favor by helping me stay fit
