EDITOR’S NOTE: Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back …

Organizers of this weekend walks for Alzheimer and ALS. The ALS walk will take place Saturday at 8 a.m. in Jones Park. The Alzheimer walk will take place Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

• Newman Occupational Health which will expand their services to the Express Care Clinic.  

• Newman Regional Health who is in the planning stages of expanding services into Osage County. NRH is working to open a durable medical equipment supply store and a primary care clinic in Osage City.

• Bryan Sailer, the ESU soccer coach, who got his first win of his ESU career when the Hornets beat Washburn 1-0 Thursday at ESU Pitch.

• The Symphony in the Flint Hills and Camp Wood who have joined up to offer Joyful Noise. The family event will combine music, horses and outdoors activities. The event will take place Saturday at Camp Wood and registration will begin at 9 a.m.

• Albert Goldbarth who was the recipient of the 2011 Don Coldsmith Award for Lifetime Literacy.

• Chad Buchholz and Becky Collins who will lead this year’s United Way fundraising drive. At the kickoff luncheon they announced a goal of $575,000. The pacesetter campaign raised $250,000 so far.

• Zaina Delgado, Brooke Douglas, Janet Weaver, Ashley Burson, Abigail Chiroy, Austin Heavener, Oscar Lemus, Brady Marstall, Sam Bland and Bryce Dakin who are nominated for Emporia High School king and queen candidates.

• Flint Hills Technical College who reported a 10 percent enrollment increase. They also reported this week they received a grant worth more than $2 million from the U.S. Deparment of Labor.

• Citizens State Bank, which will open a new branch in Reading.  

• Spangles which will build a new restaurant in Emporia. The restaurant will be located where Coburn’s was.
