Voluntary action taken due to possible E. coli O157:H7
September 27, 2011 – Emporia, Kansas – Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc. is voluntarily recalling retail packages of ground beef produced at its plant in Emporia, Kansas, company officials reported today.
A sample of the product analyzed by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) was found to contain E. coli O157:H7. As a precautionary measure, the company is recalling approximately 131,300 pounds of ground beef. Each package bears the establishment code EST 245D as well as a “Best Before or Freeze By SEP 12, 2011.” The product was produced on August 23, 2011.
The ground beef was sold in pre-packaged printed tubes or “chubs” that are placed directly into the retail meat case. The recall does not involve any clear film, tray pack ground beef or any ground beef patties.
Given the use by dates it is likely most of the affected product has already been consumed. However, the company urges consumers to check their freezers and, if they find the product in question, to return or discard it.
Specific products being recalled include:
5 lb. chub – Kroger Quality Guaranteed Ground Beef 73% Lean 27% Fat
3 lb. chub – Butcher’s Brand Premium Beef, Ground Beef 73% Lean 27% Fat
3 lb. chub – Ground Beef 73% Lean 27% Fat (Printed film for retail)
Pictures of the product labels are below.
Tyson Fresh Meats shipped the affected ground beef to the following retail customers at distribution centers in the states listed below.
Retail Customers: The Kroger Company, Food Lion, Inc., SAV-A-LOT, Spectrum Foods, Inc., Supervalu, the Defense Commissary Agency
Distribution Center Locations: Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin
A list of retail stores that subsequently received the product will be posted on USDA’s website on Wednesday, September 28. Use the following link to locate the “retail distribution list.”

Consumers are reminded that thorough cooking kills harmful bacteria, including E. coli O157:H7. People should only eat ground beef that has been cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 160° F.

What good does recalling a perishable product do if it's recalled a MONTH after it is produced and sold? Hell, it's probably been eaten by now. Thanks a ton. Glad our family doesn't buy Tyson products.

Sad part is that it should have been detected at the Emporia plant or at the plant where the product came from before Emporia ever got it. Maybe they need to look at their procedures?

this is direct from the meating place.
Illness onset dates range from Sept. 8, through Sept. 11, 2011. The on-going investigation involved collecting leftover ground beef from the patients’ home on Sept. 19. It tested positive for E. coli O157:H7 by the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s laboratory on Sept. 27.

You may not have to worry for long. Now that Don is dead this plant was 1 of 4 scheduled for closure.& John didn't want it when they got Emporia in an IBP package deal. IF he has his way now you may not have to worry about Emporia Tyson & a BAD reputation anymore.. Tyson has built a new plant that can take over the production load.

tourguide where is this new plant that Tyson has built?? I haven't heard of it? Also Scarlett I understand that it is tested at the plant, but are their procedures good enough to detect contamination and I don't think that these people have cow dung in their fridge!

Has anyone noticed that everytime a ground beef e-coli recall takes place, it's always involving this "chub" packaging? There must be something wrong with that process since it happens so often.
I don't buy chubs for that reason.
