Remaining members of the Reading town council appointed two new council members at a public meeting Tuesday evening, leaving one spot open that they hope to fill next month.
Council members also elected a new council president, a position left vacant when former Mayor Lonnie Atchison resigned earlier this month and was replaced by former Council President Kevin Sorenson.
During the meeting, current council members appointed and swore in Heather Jones and Jenifer Hanneman to serve on the board, allowing for a quorum at future meetings. The council also formally swore in Sorenson as mayor.
The council also discussed bids for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning units for the building that formerly housed the departed Tightwad Bank. Reading residents are anticipating the announcement of a new bank that will move into the building. The HVAC bid was awarded to Modern Air of Emporia for $6,814.
According to Sorenson, several people have been interested in bringing a new bank to the community. Last week, Tightwad Bank expressed interest in returning to Reading, but its offer was turned down. An announcement on a new bank is expected sometime this week.
