Campbell providing versatility for EHS

Thursday, October 27, 2011

EHS sophomore safety has blocked punt, played offense

When Cody Campbell decided to join the Emporia High football team for his sophomore year, he thought he would play junior varsity, with maybe a little bit of playing time on the varsity squad. He’s gotten much more than he bargained for.

He’s found a steady home at free safety, and Campbell has also made several big plays from a variety of positions this season. He’s intercepted a pass, caught a pass for a touchdown, blocked a punt, and returned a kickoff for a touchdown, among other accomplishments.

“We expect him to be a player for us, and he hasn’t disappointed, he’s made a lot of big plays,” EHS coach Dustin Delaney said. “He’s still learning the game, he’s going to be a really good player as he learns more about it.”

Campbell didn’t play football his freshman year. An Americus resident, Campbell said he was a bit intimidated during his first year at a large high school, and he decided not to play football.

He did play other sports, though, and Delaney took note of his athletic ability, particularly in track, where Campbell was a jumper. With a year’s experience at Emporia High, he was comfortable enough to come onto the field as a sophomore. Even with his prior experience in youth football, he wasn’t expecting nearly the amount of playing time he’s received.
