The Olpe Eagles won with a great defensive effort Friday night as they shut out Humboldt on the road. Although coach Chris Schmidt felt the offense was sloppy, the Eagles jumped out to a 21-point lead in the first half. Brandon Baumgardner scored two of those touchdowns. The first came on a one-yard run and the second was a four-yard pass to Isaac Hall. Jake Brinkman ran in the other first-half touchdown for 23 yards.
“We did things to win.” Schmidt said. “Offensively, again I just thought we were kind of sluggish. Jake Brinkman... I thought he did a lot, especially in the first half. Overall, defensively we did a nice job... We did some good things.”
The defense remained firm throughout as the Eagles kept Humboldt out of the end zone for four quarters despite sending in the J.V. unit near the end. Lee Redeker scored the first touchdown of the second half for Olpe on a 35-yard punt return. Brinkman ran in his second touchdown in the third quarter and Aaron Brinkman scored the final touchdown on a 15-yard interception return.
The Eagles will conclude their regular season this Thursday as they take on St. Mary’s-Colgan in Pittsburg.
