Madison routs SCC 66-0

Saturday, October 22, 2011

MADISON — The Madison Bulldogs were unstoppable on Friday night.

Riding high after their overtime win last week at Lebo, the Bulldogs picked up right where they left off and crushed visiting Southern Coffey County 66-0 in a game that was called at the half.

The Bulldogs (8-0) scored seven touchdowns in the first quarter, including five by Kole Schankie. Schankie’s first touchdown came on a 39-yard run that upped Madison’s lead to 14-0 with 7:25 to play in the quarter. His second TD was on a a 12-yard run, his third came on a 10-yard fumble recovery, his fourth came when he pounced on a fumble in the end zone and his fifth came on a 16-yard run to give Madison a commanding 50-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

But Schankie’s best play of the night actually came early in the game. After a Madison fumble, Schankie hustled all the way down the field and caught an SCC runner and knocked the ball loose, preventing an SCC touchdown. The Bulldogs recovered the ball at the 3-yard line and went down and scored.

“Schankie made a big-time play stripping the ball at the 3-yard line,” Madison coach Fred McClain said. “That was a big-time play. Then we turned around and drove the length of the field. That was nice to see.”

The Bulldogs were in the Titans’ backfield all night long and had six tackles for loss in the first quarter alone. The Madison offensive line also once again opened huge holes, as Schankie ran for 82 yards on the night and Dallas Thompson ran for 101 yards and a touchdown on just four carries.

“I thought we were real tough off the ball tonight,” McClain said. “They’ve (the Titans) run the ball for about 270 yards and are second in our league in rushing. So we were real concerned about that, and I thought we came off the ball real good. We penetrated when we needed to and pursued the ball and wrapped up. They just couldn’t get it going. They just could never get their rhythm.”

SCC (3-5) also helped Madison out by committing five turnovers in the first half. The Bulldogs capitalized on every one.

“They seldom make mistakes,” SCC coach Korey Lankton said of Madison. “And that’s something we’ve been battling all year is taking care of the ball. The makeup of our team is to put drives together and try to move the ball in chunks, and if you can’t take care of the ball and give up field position, for us we’d about have to play a perfect game to beat a team like Madison.”

While McClain was happy to see that his Bulldogs didn’t commit a single penalty, he was more impressed with his offensive line, which had a couple changes.

“Hayden Serrer started his first ballgame at center, and I thought he did a nice job,” McClain said. “And Nick Young got a start at guard, and we’ll look at the film, but what I saw in the game tonight both of them played very well. And I thought Damian Gutierrez, our nose guard, played real well tonight, and we need him to play well.”

Collin Kile added a touchdown pass to Tanner Williams and also rushed for a score. Walker Harred led SCC with 22 yards rushing.
