Hornets on the road again

ESU to play first road game in more than a month

Friday, October 21, 2011

The Emporia State Hornets have had five straight home games, and now they are back on the road for the first time since Sept. 10 at Pittsburg State.

The Hornets will take on Lincoln at 2 p.m. Saturday at Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City, Mo., and they are looking forward to the trip.

“It’ll be a new atmosphere to play in, and just to get back to playing somewhere else might be good,” defensive back Julian Dozier said.

The Hornets (2-5, 1-5 MIAA) enter the game coming off a disappointing loss last week to Missouri Western. The Hornets were lifeless in the first half of the game, but roared back in the second half, and even had a chance to win it at the end.

Lincoln (1-6, 0-6 MIAA) has had its own struggles. The Blue Tigers’ lone win was against Avila. They have gone through four different quarterbacks, and on defense they are giving up 53.1 points a game.

But ESU coach Garin Higgins said the Hornets aren’t taking the Blue Tigers lightly, especially considering Fort Hays State, who beat ESU, defeated Lincoln on a late field goal.

“We can’t,” Higgins said. “We’re 2-5. They are going to look at this game as a game that they can probably win. Fort Hays had to go kick a field goal there to win it, and we’re going on the road for the first time in five weeks, and we need a fast start, and need to play four quarters. We haven’t played four quarters all year.”
