Goals seemed to come in pairs Thursday night at Emporia High. When Garden City scored in the first half, EHS had an answer within a minute. When the Spartans jumped ahead late in the second half, it took the Buffaloes little more than two minutes to equalize. The two teams played to a 2-2 tie.
Oscar Lemus scored on a header off a rebound with 6:32 remaining to break a tie and give EHS a 2-1 lead. EHS coach Angel Cornejo said he soon decided to send in Bryant Sandoval to give his team a more defensive lineup to preserve the lead. The Buffaloes tied the score before Cornejo could even get Sandoval in the game.
Garden City went right back on the attack, and Eleazar Becerra scored from 15 yards out with 4:03 to go to tie the game again.
“Garden City, last year we always went back and forth, and my whole high school career, they always come back,” Lemus said. “So, I always knew, you never let your guard down, and it happened. So there’s nothing you can do about it.”
Each team had opportunities in overtime, though neither connected. A Peter Perez shot from 25 yards out was saved by the Garden City goalkeeper with 5:36 to go in the second overtime. One of the Buffaloes’ best chances, with 2:47 remaining in the second overtime, went just high. Emporia High’s Will Kraft got the ball as the game ended, but his desperation attempt from about 40 yards out didn’t come close to the goal.
