EHS D-lineman Vega playing again after missing most of season
One moment sticks out to Nick Vega when he thinks back on last week’s game against Newton. Vega, a senior defensive lineman for Emporia High, remembers a third-down sack late in the fourth quarter when he got to Newton quarterback Coleman Kingsley and forced a four-yard loss. One play later, Kingsley threw an incompletion on fourth down. Emporia had the ball to run out the clock on a victory.
Vega had missed four games and most of a fifth with an ankle injury prior to the Newton game. He made his return against the Railers in Emporia’s district opener. He had two total tackles in the game.
“He was a little rusty,” EHS coach Dustin Delaney said. “It was nice to get another big body in there. Hopefully he’ll get up to speed soon, hopefully this week.”
After getting injured early in the Spartans’ second game of the season against Washburn Rural, Vega said his hope had been to get back in time to play in the first district game. He got his wish.
When he first returned to practice, he found out he needed to catch up physically and mentally, as the defense had evolved over the course of the season while he had been on the sideline.
