No respect for the dead

Friday, October 14, 2011

On Oct. 6 I read the Gazette. [On page one it read] Flashlight Cemetery Tour!

... As I read further it said the Emporia Recreation Center and the Lyon County Historical Society were behind this. ... So now we have three possible different groups that are going to try and make an Almighty Dollar off of this under the guise of being educational. ... I ask then, why it is not conducted during daylight hours of operation? Where is their respect for the deceased people that are buried there?

In the paperwork for owning lots, it doesn’t say anywhere that there will be guided, after dark flashlight tours conducted for educating about Emporia’s history.

... I was taught at a very young age how you were supposed to do and not do in a graveyard. If you needed to go to a grave you walked in a line up close to the tombstones so as not to tread on a grave. ... I hope that young people don’t get the idea that it is okay to go there and run around, resulting in vandalism, as it has before.

This is a bottom of the barrel idea and I feel sorry for the ones that thought this up as they were probably never taught how to conduct themselves in a cemetery or how to show respect for the deceased.

Somehow, I don't think the deceased will mind.

Interesting fact: Both of these chaps are over 65 and live outside of town. They are out of touch with reality and still stuck on their archaic values. Don't listen to them. There is nothing wrong with this idea. Let us have our fun; it's not hurting anything.

Also, I think it's Eldon V. not U. Maybe I was given bad info from my informants...

Oh for goodness sakes. When I was a kid, we lived right across the street from a Chinese graveyard. Chinese people set off firecrackers for their dead. Then they leave the favorite food of the deceased right there on the gravestone. What a great practice. I love it to this day. All this quiet reverence around here makes no sense to me. Bring in the firecrackes and Chinese food.

create,

Different societies, different customs and traditions. If we had a Chinese graveyard here I am sure those traditions would be followed.

We are seeing more and more of this: Let's try this to make a buck, and "Do as I say, not as I do", (think hospital serving booze to raise more money). But then again it's proven that people donate more if they are lubed up.

I am glad there are some people left in this society that stand behind their beliefs, and show some respect and class. The two letter writers are such people. I am not sure the same can be said about the organizers of this "event"

Kind of sad, I think, but that's just me.

Funny thing about the dead, they don't file lawsuits for vandalism or a misstep, because they're dead! No I don't condone vandalism anywhere. In Italy we went to the graveyards at night and the people in the city I lived in simply said that at least the dead have some company! Sorry to say but if I were dead and laying there and somehow still had some form of consciousness it would be the most boring spot ever!

My daughter in KINSLEY,KS. tells me there is a DAYTIME tour of the local cemetery in the study of artistic markers. It is guided by the workers of the cemetery, and after, there is a dinner at an away local. ALL proceeds go to rebuild a monument for Civil War Veterans there. Key words= GUIDED, DAYTIME !

Really, Emporia? This is an issue? Folks are getting bent out of shape because some other folks are going to walk on soil, underneath which happen to lie several piles of rotting animal material in various stages of decomposition?

Please find something better to do with your time than whine about non-issues. Netflix is cheap...

Historically, cemeteries used to be quite popular places for people to play games requiring a field. More so than that though, cemeteries have been a place for picnics. There was a time when it was quite common for people to picnic and frolic in cemeteries.

I'm sure our Native Americans would puke after seeing this.
