ESU makes first cut in presidential search

The first cut of the search for a new Emporia State University President has been made. The 19-member presidential search committee has narrowed the field of applicants from dozens to approximately a dozen.
The second step for the search committee has started and includes confidential personal interviews of the remaining candidates. The candidates selected to be interviewed fit certain criteria established earlier in the process.
“We are looking for a candidate with exceptional communication skills, one with prior executive experience in higher education,” said Search Committee Chair Deryl Wynn. “We are looking for one that is innovative and dynamic. That has some demonstrated history of being responsive to students and faculty. One that is community minded in the sense of appreciating the relationship that is necessary for a university to be successful and someone who can lead.”
Wynn said he received a lot of feedback from those with fond memories of ESU and the Emporia community during the first stage of the process, all of it positive.
“People largely called me to share with me their fond memories of the university and asked me to work hard to find a president that would be there to create similar memories for who comes whenever they’re in office,” he said. “So, I was really pleased with this part of the process although it’s been intense and tedious at times, but it seems like it’s been necessary to get it right. I’m convinced that we will.”
The search must remain confidential as the process moves forward not to alert the candidates’ current employers of their interest in the position.
“We’ll conduct the confidential employee interviews and we’ll do that under the personnel exception of the open meetings act,” said Wynn. “We’ll have these discussions, then from that standpoint we will identify those that we then move forward and recommend to the Board of Regents.”
Wynn and the search committee plan to have completed interviews by by late October or early- to mid-November and intend to make a recommendation to the Kansas Board of Regents by December. Wynn thought KBOR would make their final decision by April 2012.
Until the final selection is made by KBOR and the candidate offers and accepts, no disclosure of candidates will be made.
“If there is somebody that has a job now that we want to be the president of Emporia State University and they have told us they want to be the president of Emporia State University, I want to respect the representations that our consultants and I have made to them.” said Wynn. “We will disclose the interests only when absolutely necessary. I would say that if we are getting ready to pick you, then the disclosure would be absolutely necessary.”
Once the candidate is selected and accepts the position, it depends on the candidate’s obligation to a current employer when he or she would start the job.
“Part of what we want to do is be responsible to wherever they are,” said Wynn. “Make sure that their seperation doesn’t result in unnecessary hardship for their current employer. All of the people we are looking at are responsible enough to where that is a consideration, and we can work with that.”

I prefer someone that is outside of education who will prepare a student for effective personnal and social life without the liberal progressive slant.

Outside of education? You want someone to run an education institution who is outside of education?
An engineer maybe?
Or a chef?
Or a wedding planner?

If it weren't for ESU, Emporia would be in an extra sad place, right now. Emporia needs to build its infrastructure around this institution, no matter the student population. Without the university, this community would already be dead. Emporia needs ESU to survive, no matter your opinions of it.

Reddog - Historians will tell you, that President Eisenhower learned the hard way in office; government does not operate like the military. Read his books, and that of Truman. You cannot just say " do this" and expect the others to follow when you are President. Two different brands. While I look upon Ike as a hero (always have), he had a lot to learn about Congress when he was president. Point being, you must understand the office and the politics.

So, reddog - I'll probably upset you with this. I look forward to hearing from the search committee of whom they want to interview in the next round. I am a proud ESU alum. Will they select a businessman in the role of President, probably not. You have to understand what it means to be in public administration. And, please, do not give to me your rant (or weblinks). Just because your real estate firm is called "American Real Estate" with a big American flag flying behind, doesn't make you any better than the rest of us. Let it rest, reddog. You annoy us.

Personally, I believe the temperament of "reddog" will die with the older, bigoted population. Just out of curiosity, who else is on board?

Out of curiosity, reddog, how many customers have you lost because of your bigoted posts on TEG? I, sure as heck, wouldn't want you as my real estate agent.

Richie you don't upset me at all, we just need a President at the University to get rid of all the dead weight. NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE AS GARY SCHEUR WHO WAS AN EMPORIA STATE GRAD AND BUSINESS EXECUTIVE WAS VOTED DOWN BY THE BOARD OF REGENTS TO LEAD THE PATH TO A NEW PRESIDENT TO TURN THE COLLEGE AROUND. I am going to do everything in my power to remove the board of regents. And this will come to pass. When I find out who the new president is going to be I will disclose to the public my investigative report and disclose him, her or it to the public.

Steve, I wish all could get along. It just PISSES me off that KB thinks HE should investigate the new ESU President. Who does he think he is? If he does try to discredit the person, I will start throwing "ROCKS". I have no connection with ESU and my daughter will attend TCU. So let ESU do their job, they don't need KBs help.. With that Im goin fishin, All have a nice Day !!!
