Second Straight at State

Monday, November 21, 2011

NEWTON — The Madison Bulldogs are getting pretty good at taking home hardware from Newton. And now they are adding another trophy to their collection.

The Bulldogs defeated South Gray 30-12 in the 8-Man Division I championship game Saturday at Newton to earn its second state championship in as many years.

“I thought the kids handled it really well,” Madison coach Fred McClain said. “From the very beginning of the season with us coming out of the blocks ranked No. 1 in the state, we had to kind of carry that burden throughout the year. And actually throughout the year we played Lebo, who was ranked second in the state, and then we played Lakeside, who was second in the state, and then we played South Gray, which was second in the state. So everybody got a shot at us and we’re still standing. We’re state champs and we’re really proud of it.”

The Bulldogs, just like they did last year rode senior running back Kole Schankie to the state title. Schankie rushed for 235 yards on 37 carries and scored two touchdowns in the title game.
