A vehicle fire in Emporia this afternoon destroyed a car and left a busy street blocked for about half an hour.
Police and a fire crew were dispatched to the Prairie Street bridge that runs over Interstate 35 around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday for a reported car fire. The crew arrived to find a late-model Chevy Blazer idle on the bridge with its engine in flames.
No one was injured in the fire, but the Blazer was totaled.
The driver of the vehicle, Katie Krueger of Emporia, said she was driving on Prairie Street when the car died on the bridge. As she tried to re-start it she heard a pop but didn’t know where it came from.
A passing driver, Brandi Hudson, noticed flames coming from under the car and stopped to alert Krueger, who safely exited the car and called 911.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
