Last week the Kansas School Superintendents’ Association selected Seaman Public School’s Superintendent Mike Mathes as the 2012 Kansas Superintendent of the Year.
Candidates for superintendent of the year are assessed according to their professionalism, communication, community involvement and leadership in meeting the needs of students.
While Emporia Superintendent Theresa Davidson did not receive the award we commend her for doing a great job leading the district.
Davidson brought to the job plenty of experience and knowledge which helped with a seamless transition from former superintendent John Heim that has kept the district moving forward.
She has exhibited excellent communication skills, and involvement both in the school and in the community.
Even though she is in her first year she has had to navigate some difficult situations. From selling the Lowther School Buildings, to school start -stop times she carefully listened to community input and then made changes to help balance community interests.
But what people may not realize is that she had a tough budget situation and she held the line. Most administrators would have likely passed increases on to taxpayers in the form a tax increase however with Davidson has been able to make substantial cuts that with out compromising quality.
The community should be proud of the job Davidson is doing and with continued good work we would not be surprised if she were awarded the KSSA Superintendent of the Year Award in the future.
