Another earthquake struck Oklahoma shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The 5.6-magnitude quake comes on the heels of a 4.7-magnitude temblor that occurred just after 2 a.m. with an epicenter about 50 miles east of Oklahoma City.
Saturday night's quake was felt as far north as Emporia.
"It seemed like it lasted about a minute," said Gerald Goll of Emporia. "The walls were shaking, and for a little bit I started to feel like I should get off the second floor. Then it just stopped."
Residents in north west Emporia also reported their houses shaking around 10 pm Saturday.
USGS data shows the earthquake occurred at 10:53 p.m. So far, there have been no reports of damage or injuries from either of the weekend's earthquakes.
If you have information you would like to report call Russ Morgan at 620-757-5587.

i felt it in emporia. the floor was shaking and vibrating under my feet and my plant leaves was shaking and it appeared that the window frame/sill shaking. I was like what the heck is going on. i went out the door to see if i can see anything like a typical human behavior knowing full well there's nothing to see. then it was over. i know Oklahoma is very active and check the USGS site from time to time but never thought in a hundred years we would feel their quakes up here.

My wife and I felt it for about 10-15 seconds in Olpe at apprix 10:56 pm. It literally shook the house. In our bedroom on the second floor, the blinds were slightly swaying, the floor lamp was rocking and the bed shook. My wife was accusing me of trying to play some kind of trick to scare her. You could feel the house moving. If it would have lasted longer, we were getting ready to get up and get out of the house. It was eerie! We had never experienced a tremor before last night. Can imagine the feeling one might get being closer to the epicenter. Didn't seem to do any damage, though.

Fracting for oil can cause earthquakes. Those oil companies say no. Of course they would.

I was sitting at my table and it started shaking, so naturally I thought the dog was under it scratching away. Nope, the dog was across the room staring at the wall, which too was shaking. My husband and I just stood there staring at each other, both thinking the same thing... we just bought this house 3 weeks ago and everyone was right about what they told us...the house is haunted...lol scary thought at the time but fortunately it wasn't that after all...phew lol

Create, I hope you will provide a link to a scientific publication to confirm your theory.
I seriously doubt that fracking has any connection as the tectonic plates which are grinding together are semi-continental in size and the drilling only "scratches" the surface of bedrock that is hundreds of miles thick. Furthermore, if such were possible, wouldn't it be a good thing for releasing pressure thereby making for smaller earthquakes which are less destructive?

I never had a minutes worth of education on fracking, Don't even know what that means. BUT, I do think that liquids of any kind can not be compressed. Soooooo logically thinking if a underground rock structure/cavern is full of oil/water then it is part part of the overall strength of such structure/cavern? Then in my thinking when that oil/water is removed then the internal strength is gone and the overall structure is compromised. Did I make any sense?

james,
I realize that Wikipedia is not scientific; however, they do include a report in the UK. Also, many European countries no longer allow fracting.
"A report in the UK concluded that fracking was the likely cause of some small earth tremors that happened during shale gas drilling. [39][40] In addition the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports that "Earthquakes induced by human activity have been documented in a few locations" in the United States, Japan, and Canada; "the cause was injection of fluids into deep wells for waste disposal and secondary recovery of oil, and the use of reservoirs for water supplies."[41] The disposal and injection wells referenced are regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act and UIC laws and are not wells where hydraulic fracturing is generally performed."
I could have linked to those particular resources named in the paragraph I quoted, but I did not. I will look for scientific journal info on the subject, but remember, oil companies use scientific journals to make their excuses when they refuse to pay people for water contamination after fracting has occurred nearby.

"A study on fracking done by the Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS) this past year had this to say about an earthquake swarm in Oklahoma near a fracking site, “the strong correlation in time and space as well as a reasonable fit to a physical model suggest that there is a possibility these earthquakes were induced by hydraulic-?fracturing.” It goes on to say that is hard to say with a “high degree of certainty” if the earthquakes are being caused by nature or fracting. More studies will need to be done to know what is going on for sure."
Will try to find that OGS report, but they aren't willing to say for sure as you can see. I wonder what prevents them from this "high degree of certainty:? Politics as usual? After all, OK is an oil producing state. I'm guessing politics and pro oil are bedfellows. How can it be nature when earthquake "swarms" are occurring when they never did before?

Look at this find: Up to the minute information from the USGS. I found it interesting to see how many earthquakes have occurred very recently.
BTW james, Oklahoma is on the Meers fault, but that doesn't prove anything with regard to recent "swarms."
A great list of up to date quakes.

that's funny!!!
and as far as fracting i read about it online after hearing about it in a movie. it's real and there was some of it going on north of Denver CO somewhere i read online awhile back. And it causes earthquakes when it was going on. i read an article last night about the Oklahoma quakes and someone mentioned the idea considering the oil drilling in the area down there.

I felt it! At first I thought it was a wind gust, since I live in an old house that has been known to sway in the wind. Then somebody went by with a crazy loud stereo, so I thought maybe that was it. But it continued after the noise quit. I had the Wichita news on TV at the time, and they started talking about it; that's when I realized what was actually happening.

CREATE has done an admirable job in researching for support of his position. Perhaps I should have been more clear in stating that I was talking about major earthquakes as opposed to near surface tremors.
However, as CREATE as adequately pointed to several potential sources I will amend my comments and concede that until there is further scientific studies such position as he advocates has merit and is worthy of due consideration.
I did find this news item online tonight to add to the discussion concerning the EPA finding evidence of fracking chemicals in ground water in Wyoming.

I thought everyone might be interested in the following link I got curious about the military service of politicians when the host on C-Span this morning mentoned that less than 5% of our current politicians have served in the military. The numbers for the legislative branch are better than that. The numbers for the executive branch are really bad.

Yes it was a great parade, Thank You Vets. I wish somebody would teach the young Hispanics on the corner of 9th & Comm. to remove their stocking caps when the flag passed. It was cool, and besides they were busy laughing at a couple of senior men that did remove theirs. OH Well, what do you do??

Those ignorant fools in the stocking caps won't serve this country either. They will, however, take from it all they can in the many different forms that the taxpayer supports. We can all form a list of those services.
What do you do? Keep living well, it's the best revenge.
Keep insisting that your own children respect the flag and all that it stands for.
Keep telling your children about Veterans Day and those who have fought to keep our country strong.
Keep sending your children to school and insisting that they respect their teachers and take full advantage of the education we provide them.
Keep motivating your children to take part in charitable activities with you.
Keep saving for your child's post high school education, and keep reminding them that scholarships abound for those who work hard for good grades.
Keep teaching your children about the rule of law and how to live by it.
Keep teachng your children about being responsible for their own actions.
And when we see those young hoods not removing their caps when the flag passes by, whisper to your children that you never want to see them behave in such a disrespectful and despicable manner.
I know all of you can add to this list of how we can teach our own children to live in this great country and to continue to make it great by working toward greatness not skulking on street corners like this group did.
Please, join me in adding to this list of what we can do.

I know that the color guard is usually the 1st thing in a parade, maybe Emporia should try something new.
A banner carried before the color guard saying.
"Show respect for our country !
Stand up & remove your hats for our flag."
Maybe the Chamber could get this done for the upcoming Christmas Parade?
