Speaking for Jack

I must respond to Steve Sauder’s editorial about “Jack.” Jack and I are close. I spent days and nights treating Jack for kidney and liver failure. Even with all the multiple needle sticks, treatments and manipulations, Jack would lick my hand and wag his tail. He can’t speak for himself, so I will. He told me he wants to stay.
It shows the callus attitude of the Emporia “elite,” to suggest that Jack’s owners should pack him up and move away. Have they not noticed almost two thousand people did just that over the last ten years? A business like mine depends on Jack to have caregivers with enough disposable income for good care. Something that’s becoming harder for clients to do. My employees aren’t as equal as employees at Hills. No tax abatements for us, just some of the highest property taxes and overhead in Kansas. Every client that can stay in Emporia, make a good wage, and that keeps their money in town, is more important than ever.
I’ve had my business in Emporia for 28 years. My children are raised and moved on to greener pastures. I hoped they might be able to find jobs in Emporia, but very few opportunities exist here. That was not the case when I moved my family here. It could be that way again, unless too many “Jacks” pack up and leave. Then at some point, I pack up and leave. Then who’s going to hire my employees? Or pay the thousands of dollars in property tax on my building? You see my point. Jack needs to stay. So does Steve, so does Phil. We have to work hard to give them a reason.
I’m jealous for Jack and want to be able to continue our relationship. I know he feels the same; he told me so.
