High speed chase ends in Lyon County

The driver that led authorities on a high-speed chase this morning is a 15-year-old from Kansas City.

A Lyon County Sheriff’s vehicle was totaled and the passenger of the car, Damien M. McBride, was transported to Newman Regional Health following the high speed chase.

Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope said the Kansas Highway Patrol were pursuing the vehicle. The driver was driving a stolen car with Texas plates.

Both the driver and McBride, who is also from Kansas City, did not have driver's licenses. The 15-year old, whose name was not released, was turned over to Lyon County Community Corrections. McBride, 18, was treated for minor injuries. He is now confined in the Lyon County jail with charges pending from the County Attorney's office.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office became aware of the pursuit when it was in Butler County, Cope said.

“We put a couple of deputies out on the turnpike and attempted to spike them but it was unsuccessful,” Cope said.

The driver got off at the Emporia exit and onto Interstate 35. Another deputy put out spike sticks and the driver swerved to miss the spikes, rear-ending a Lyon County Sheriff pick-up at high speed near Graphics Arts Road. The pick-up was totaled. The deputy was not in the vehicle at the time and was not hurt.

“Our big concern was to keep it (the chase) out of town,” Cope said.

NEXT time, you become aware of the chase a county away, try using a dump truck for a roadblock. A little less damage than a pick up truck.

Agreed, neighbor.

venena_1, yes it is crazy, but the brain of adolescents don't stop developing until age 21 or 22, especially the frontal lobe where such decisions are made. That's no pass for these lousy kids, no way. They need to have the book thrown at them.

I'm guessing we will be bearing all the medical expenses too.

Wouldn't you love to be in on the interview of this kid? "What were you thinking?" Ummmm, I dunno.

Great job, LEO's. Sorry about your truck. All in a day's work. New truck coming. Too bad we have to have this expenditure right when we need it the least. Wish we could get those little idiots to pay for it.
