Policy on signs

Saturday, March 5, 2011

I would encourage the leadership of Emporia to develop a sign policy for the main highway entrances to the city. As many other people, I drive into Emporia from the south on Highway 99 nearly every day. Daily I see a plethora of at least 20 signs within the first block or two after crossing the Cottonwood River bridge. The signs are various shapes, colors and sizes: ugly, ugly, ugly. A policy of some uniformity would give visitors a much more positive feeling about Emporia and its services when they enter the city.

Leo, here's Emporia's sign policy:

Signs must be carved in Lyon County limestone, designed by a "professional" architect, and approved in secret session by the city commission.

I'd like to propose an addendum to the policy outlined by bobhornet. "The cost of the signs as described above must be disproportionately expensive. So much so that it angers the rabid dogs on the Gazette online forum".

Need a second to add this to the policy. See? This is how you do stuff transparently city commissioners.

Have we all had our shots LOL Will they have to take down some of the signs to make way for those great new stones? Wasnt there a big ado about size and number of them not to long ago ? I was thinking when Jesse wanted to honor the vets he was told way too many signs. I guess the group that want these things rank higher than the Vets?

Good point booker. I think we could lose the "We're building an inclusive community" sign to make room for a sign honoring veterans. What does that PC garbage even mean? Everyone is welcome? Gang members, criminals, drug addicts, etc. are all welcome to come to Emporia because we are an "inclusive" community?

I would hope we would be building a relatively exclusive community that values hard working, thoughtful, law abiding, respectful, productive citizens. Remove barriers for new businesses to come to town and employ our great citizens. Keep taxes reasonable so those businesses and citizens might thrive. Excluding the negatives is still being exclusive. I think I prefer an exclusive community myself if those tenets are upheld by the citizens.

Excellent comment, allintogether. Trouble is, all the citizens don't uphold values that can be considered responsible.

For one thing, a lot of them don't vote.

Wow. Allin, you are reeeeaaaly streatching on your first paragraph. How would anyone look at that sign and think "well, I am skipping that Emporia place! They just let anyone in."
Are you just ticked be wise you have deemed that to be PC? We should celebrate our diversity. If you want exclusivity join a country club. In America we don't (shouldn't) discriminate.

I would respond to you oog but I am not sure how you got what you got out of my post. Particularly my first paragraph. Note all the question marks at the end of 3 interrogative sentences. If you have answers to my questions, great, please provide them. Otherwise, have a cogent point to make, stay away from your ideological talking points, get spell check (your phone didn't catch "streatching"), and look for a fight somewhere else.

Ahh yes, rule #2 of an online debate; If you have no good rebuttal, look for misspellings!
I have to giggle with you dismissing my point as "ideological" when your point is that we should have a Utopian Emporia, where the people living here should fit into your defination of worthiness.
I do believe that I made a cogent point. You were saying that you would like this city to be more "exclusive." My point, since you are having trouble reading between the typos, is that is not how America works. We don't get to pick and choose who our neighbors are.
To answer your "3 interrogative sentences" "What does that PC garbage even mean?" I think it is supposed to be a celebration of out cultural, ethnic, religious, and racial diversity.
"Everyone is welcome?" Yes, everyone is welcome. This falls under many, many constitutional rights. If you need an educational explanation of which ones and how they apply, I am willing to teach you.
"Gang members, criminals, drug addicts, etc. are all welcome to come to Emporia because we are an "inclusive" community?" Well, hopefully criminals would be locked up. If not then we have no right to keep them from their legal pursuit of happiness. As long as they are following the law, you have no right to tell them where they can live.
I hate the "slippery slope" argument because it always leads to hyperbole, but here it is: If we start keeping "undesirables" out, where does the definition of undesirable end? Is it just druggies, criminals, and gang bangers? What about ugly people? People with bad breath? ......... Dark skinned people?
Why do you get to pick who stays, and goes? I knew some pot-heads when I was younger. They were pleasant, and for some reason, always smell of incense (kidding). I would rather live next to a nice well-mannered pot-head, than a bitter segregationist.

All signs should be posted in both English and Spanish. That would prevent a lot of crashes.

Oog,

So is rule 3 of online debate disregarding the premise of the original post and romping off on some ridiculous rant trying to frame my comments as somehow racist, segregationist or elitist? Is this a Saul Alinsky devotee' or the man himself reincarnated?

The only person talking about excluding people on a basis of a person's weight, propensity for halitosis or skin color is you. I suggested that people honor veterans with a sign instead of some generic looking sign that informs people that we are building an inclusive community if the number of signs is at issue. It falls flat by comparison for me and I voiced my opinion about PC language because I think it is divisive, vague and bordering on inverted McCarthyism.

I never appointed myself population control czar. I simply put out some pretty basic principles that I think Emporians should keep in mind when planning or trying to attract businesses. Those traits apply to GOOD PEOPLE, irrespective of what I think are irrelevant characteristics like race, creed, income level, looks, bad breath, or religion that you appear to think is so important. You took my well meant sentiment that includes any and all good people and injected ugliness into it. Nice work.

What is so wrong with wanting to live in a nice town, surrounded by nice people who all have nice jobs making nice money and don't have to pay enormous taxes? I would never presume to tell good people how to live their lives, how to think or how to feel. I don't think gang members, criminals or drug addicts are nice people so I don't associate with them. Is that OK with you?

oograh (anonymous) says...

Yeah, the majority of your post was about how you would like Emporia to be an exclusive society. Even if it is not the premise of your post it was the majority of it. What you are talking about is segregation. I prefaced my slippery slope comment with a disclaimer of it being hyperbole. Sometime hyperbolic statements can help point out the fallacy of an idea. I still don't like using it though, as it can be misconstrued as putting words in your mouth. To be clear I am NOT accusing you of racism. I have seen nothing in your post to accuse you of that. I apologize if I made it sound that way.
For the record I would much rather see those "accept Jesus or burn in hell" be replaced by one honoring the troops.

Now that is something we can certainly agree on. That gaggle of chuckleheads are an example of people that understand their right of free speech but accept no responsibility for the vile things they spew against very honorable people. The supreme court upheld their right to say what they say and they never address the responsibility component of the right.

I think they have marginalized themselves fairly well and they are just dogs barking in the dark. Its just a shame that we have to hear them do it.

To see evidence of this marginalization, check out the 2007 BBC documentary "The most hated family in America". The children don't have any idea what they are protesting.

Yeah, I actually saw that Documentary. Made me sick. It is abhorrent that they can go to a hero's (Hero is used so often I don't feel like it correctly describes our men and women in uniform) funeral and use the very rights that the soldier fought and died for against their very family. I can't put into words the disgust I feel when I see that happen. It is enough to make me nearly second guess my convictions to the Constitution.
Thank you for that comment Allin, you made my day today reading it!

Please don't lump together those Phelps sickos with all those who call themselves Christian, or even with the folks who have the signs on their private property here locally. The Phelps gang (I refuse to refer to their "church" name because they have no right claiming such an honorable title) is what I'd call the lunatic fringe, and they give us all a bad name.
