ALLEN — Both teams played to their strengths.
For the Northern Heights Wildcats it was passing the ball around until a good shot opened up. For Jayhawk Linn, it was dumping the ball inside to its 6-foot-5 post player.
But the Wildcats strength prevailed in a 56-48 opening-round win in sub-state action Monday at NHHS.
“It was a huge win for us,” coach Lanny Massey said. “I’m really proud of our kids. We got ourselves to the next step in a rematch with Burlingame. It’s a game we feel like we can win. If we go out and play like we did the other night, we’ll be very much in the ballgame.”
NHHS fell behind by a bucket early but scored eight consecutive points to take a 8-2 lead. A layup by Nathan Campbell put the Wildcats up 12-6. But then the 6-5 Taylor Kellerman went on a roll.
Kellerman scored six consecutive points and brought the Jayhawks back and they tied it at 18 at the end of the first quarter.
