Lyon County could be a part of a federal disaster declaration following the May 21 storm that produced a tornado that tore through Reading.
Lyon County Emergency Management Coordinator Rick Frevert provided an update on the tornado during the Lyon County Commission action session.
“The state and federal folks were in town, we had a multi-agency meeting at the sheriff’s office, which is kind of a kick-off facting-finding pre-declaration type of meeting,” Frevert said.
Frevert said it looks like either late July or August there could be a request for federal declaration for a disaster area from the State of Kansas to the federal government. Frevert said it appears Reading and Lyon County will be one of those applicants.
“The timeline is we’re 30 to 90 days out until we know what’s going to happen,” he said. “In the meantime, we have a lot of documenting to get in place.”

The county isn’t intending to tear the building down, but the proceedings are required by FEMA per a grant contract. The original contract states that the building must be torn down and turned into green space by late August. An extension has been requested and the county is waiting to hear if the extension is approved.

Just curious. When and if disaster money is available for LYON COUNTY, will Reading get the majority of this or does the COUNTY have it's hands out??
