The Lyon County Courthouse is set to be paid off eight years early.
Dan Slater, Lyon County controller, said Thursday the Lyon County Commission will need to pass a resolution next week to allow a letter to be sent to the state to stop collecting the half-cent sales tax, which is being used to pay off the courthouse bonds.
The bonds were originally set to be paid off in 2019. The bonds will be paid off Aug. 1 of this year.
“They were careful,” Slater said, of the Lyon County Commission.
The sales tax will continue to be collected for 90 days after the request of cancellation is remitted to the state, Slater said.
The money will initially be put into the bond fund and later transferred to the county’s general fund after all the creditors are paid off. The money that will be transferred into the general fund can help defray costs of things such as the county’s share of the Bowyer Community Building, tornado and storm costs.
The county’s one percent sales tax will continue until 2014. The sales tax was voted on and approved by voters in Lyon County. It went into effect in July 2009.

I don't care if it's paid off, they won't let the tax expire, they will find some other stupid expenditure for it, just like the courthouse. Sure hope those tourists come and save us soon.

No, probably not the rocks; that's city money; it has already been established that those will be paid for from the city's tourism budget. This is county money.
If there's any excess money collected, I think the fairgrounds would be a good investment. If it MUST be located in the middle of town, it needs to look good.

This is the one forum that should be reserved for "THANK YOU'S" AND "GOOD JOB"
The tax WAS paid off early.
Let's all wait for the budget stories before we jump on the commissioners. We know it is coming, let's just wait. If you have an opinion please e-mail the commission. And let's all wait for what we know is probably coming. We do have until August to let our opinion be known on the county and city budgets. to repeat; Good job on paying off the bonds early.

I refuse to say good job, paying off a stupid decision is still a stupid decision, the only redemption is to let the tax lapse, which I'll lay good money does not happen.

"blue". You are right. I got crossed on the city/county money issue. Steve, you are also right. It is a good thing that the courthouse get's paid off early and a more positive attitude should prevail. I guess we can be hopeful/thankful if our taxes are reduced some.....

I'm one of those glad to know the courthouse is getting paid off early. I hope there's a celebration of some sort.
Many have not believed that the courthouse was a good expenditure and that we could have done just fine without it. Truth is, the old courthouse was a crowded place. Besides, we are the county seat and the district court is extremely busy. Try it. Check out the dockets for all the judges. It's just back to back cases all day every day, and they needed the room too.
Nice job, Lyon County! Now when's the party?
