Support Reading

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

TODAY MARKS A month since the Reading tornado ripped through the town, causing damage to much of the town’s homes and businesses.

While it has been a month, the residents of Reading needs the support of their friends and neighbors more than ever. The critical debris-clearing moments are over, but the re-building must now take place.

If you’ve been looking for a way to help Reading, you’re in luck with two upcoming events.

The first event, Rebuild Reading Day, will be Saturday in Reading. It will go all day and many activities are planned which will directly benefit Reading.

The day starts with a walk/run with registration starting at 6:30 a.m. and the walk/run beginning at 7:30 a.m.; at noon there will be bands, raffles, pony rides, bouncy toys and vehicle displays; at 6 p.m. there will be a free fish/hot dog dinner; and 9ish, there will be fireworks. The event is free and donations will be accepted during the event.

The second event will be a benefit concert July 1 at the Granada Theatre. Details of this event are still unfolding, but it’s sure to be big. Five local media outlets will be sponsoring the event.

If you can’t make it out to either of these events, donations are still being taken through the United Way of the Flint Hills. To donate to the United Way directly for Reading, call 342-7564. Another way to donate is by calling the public information officer of Reading, Barbara Schlobohm. She can be reached at (620) 699-3827.

More volunteer opportunities will be available as the town begins the painstaking rebuilding process. Contact Schlobohm to see what opportunities are available.

A month later, we want Reading to know we haven’t forgotten them. Our hearts and hands continue to be with the residents of Reading. Please show your support by donating time or money.
