County commissioners discuss Reading

Friday, June 17, 2011

During their action session Thursday, Lyon County commissioners discussed Reading with Rick Frevert, Lyon County Emergency Management director.

Frevert said there are 102 homes in Reading and around 49 properties have been demolished and hauled away following the May 21 tornado that devastated that town, which is nearly half of Reading’s homes.

“It’s starting to take on a different look,” Frevert said. “This is not a pretty one.”

Frevert said the water tower in Reading was checked Monday but the engineer couldn’t make a call on it. X-ray equipment will now be brought in to check the tower.

Frevert said it is still unknown if Reading’s post office will return.

“We haven’t heard from the post office,” he said.

Commissioners also discussed possible grant applications to help with Reading. The item was discussed further during the Reading City Council meeting.

Commissioners also discussed the Fanestil building and the possible demolition of the building. Because FEMA money is being used to relocate the plant, the requirements are to turn the site, which is in a flood plain, to green space by Aug. 22. However, an extension has been filed to extend that deadline. Dan Slater, Lyon County controller, said the county would be liable for $1,200,000 if the extension isn’t granted or the building isn’t taken down.

“Hopefully we will get notice whether the extension is granted or not in a week or so,” Slater said.

Because of the timeline, the county will need to put the demolition out to bid next week unless the extension is granted. The notice will have to be publicized for two weeks.
