NASCAR driver Clint Bowyer has donated $10,000 for long term recovery endeavors in Reading.
Bowyer made the donation to the United Way of the Flint Hills. Jami Reever, executive director, said they have received more than $53,000 from local residents wanting to help.
“And that’s just what from our chapter, there’s more money coming in from across the state,” Reever said. “It’s been very remarkable.”
The Clint Bowyer 79 Fund is making the donation. Reever thanked Bowyer and the fund advisors for their generosity in a time of need.
An EF-3 tornado the evening of May 21 caused large-scale damage in Reading, a town of about 240 people located 19 miles northeast of Emporia, which is Bowyer’s hometown. About 90 homes in Reading suffered damage severe enough that 120 residents have been displaced.
Reever said the United Way has meetings set up next week with Lyon County and city of Emporia officials to discuss how to distribute the money and what it will be used for.
Donations for Reading are still being accepted. To donate, visit the website at www.uwfh.org or mail a donation to 702 Commercial St., Emporia, KS 66801. A donation may also be made at the United Way office during office hours.
Meanwhile Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas Pizza Hut restaurants will hold a fundraiser to benefit the United Way Pizza Hut Tornado Relief Fund on Monday. More than 550 Pizza Hut locations across the four states will participate.
Fifteen percent of all dine-in, carryout and delivery sales on Monday will go to the Relief Fund to assist the victims in Reading, Joplin and other communities in the four states hit by tornados.
