In the 2008 election Barack Obama inspired voters to believe the world could be different.
He campaigned that he could unite divided political systems, bring frivolous spending under control, bring troops home, pull our country out of a recession and create jobs to move the country forward.
With his charisma and polished speech-giving abilities, voters believed him.
Three years since the campaign promises, America’s hope in a united America has faded.
The point could not be underscored more than by watching the debate over raising the federal debt limit. The stalemate between the Republicans and Democrats and the political sparring has done little to earn Americans’ confidence that anyone has a unified plan for the future.
It’s obvious now that Obama should have spent more time over the last several years working on uniting parties and people instead of falling into the trap of playing Washington politics.
Polls suggest that Americans still hope for a political system that works together. Now is the time for Obama to make good on his campaign promises.

"Obama should have spent more time over the last several years working on uniting parties"
What? Where have you been? Every move he has made to unite parties since day one has resulted in his getting shot down. That's where the media got the idea to name the GOP the "party of no."
Don't you remember in one of his speeches to Congress we heard a very loud, "You lie"? When has any president in history ever experienced such a disrespectful act? Never! That is exactly the sort of thing that has been happening all along.
Even now, this push by the GOP is nothing more than a giant effort to thwart his efforts at re-election. It's just a big game to those Washington jerks, all of them.
I'll tell you what all those jerks should have been spending more time doing all this time and that is getting the American man and woman back to work. When people are getting a paycheck, they are paying their FICA taxes.
Instead, those jerks are busy threatening Social Security and Medicare when they should be looking at how much tax the wealthy pay, or whether they pay any at all. But oh no, if the wealthy pay more taxes, they may not do any hiring.
Oh really? Are they doing any hiring now?

Both political parties are a " Joke " . Some will say that the " Tea Party " is a political party that is seperate from the Democratic and Republican Parties. To this I say, " What a load of crap " . The Tea Party is nothing more than a " Far Right Wing/Radical Faction ", that the GOOFUP/Republican party has aligned itself with and embraced, which I now believe the GOOFUP/Republican Party, now wishes they had never done.
The Democratic Party is not a whole lot better, because they too have their radical, satellite factions that are orbiting about the Democratic Party. And both parties are controlled by the " Wealthy Faction " , inside as well as outside the U.S. and therein lies the true problem with the U.S. . The whole political scene in the U.S. is nothing more than a " Contro and Power " GAME and nothing more .

I say get rid of all of them and start over the way it was supposed to be. One side wants to cut aid to disabled and people who have worked all their life and paid ss tax and the other side wants to raise the debt ceiling while government continues to pay themselves hundreds of thousands a year and send hundreds of thousands overseas and let people here suffer for it. Government is supposed to be "by the people, of the people, and for the people". If this was the case, would they be threatening to cut programs for people who can't who are unable to work due to age/disability and increasing joblessness when they are supposed to be trying to decrease it?

They will cut programs to people who can't work because they can. Retired people and veterans, both disabled and otherwise, have no real voice and can't fight back. Many of us lost big time when our 401K accounts took major hits not long ago. We no longer can get back to work to make up for it. We are being victimized by the very people who made all those promises when they were running for office.
Who shall we thank? Bush senior and his buddies at Enron? How about some of those other giant corporation administrators who embezzled millions and caused many pension funds to go belly up?
Are these politicians interested in the everyday blue collar worker? Or are they interested in the high-dollar company that can line their pockets? Ever check how much a congressman's yearly salary has increased in the few years he has been in office. Some growth is in the millions. What?
These congressmen and Wall Street guys are ones who made it on the old man's money by attending prestigious schools. Later jobs came from daddy's company. Yeah, the birth lottery. Tell me, everyone, who has it harder, the Wall Street guy typing up millions or your friendly neighborhood Washington politician, or the guy paving a road in 105 degree heat?
How about Bush junior and all that money and precious lives spent on a war that never did find a damn thing in Iraq? It would have been so much easier and certainly cheaper to send in a team of Navy seals to get rid of Saddam. But that is not the reason we were given for going to war. Oh no, we had to go after those Weapons of Non Existence.
A flipping war about nothing...oil...Halliburton...Cheney....Incompetence...Cheese and Rice!
My last question is to President Obama and the entire congress. Howcum you take my tax dollars and give it to some country like Afghanistan whose leaders steal it all for themselves? Then you want to cut my social security and veteran's benefits? WTF.

Here are some questions for Chris Walker.
How is any President supposed to keep his campaign promises, when the opposing party does everything it can to see that the party of the and the President fails miserably and this is all due to outside " don' t give a damn " influences, that are paying the elected " representitives of the people " to do, only what they pay the elected House and Senate congressmen/women pay them and most of what they pay for benefits noone but those who are wealthy enough to afford to " pay for/buy " a congressman/woman to do their bidding ?
And isn' t what is happening right now in D.C. a perfect example of the non-partisan, " Buying " of congressional votes ?
Amd as long as this is allowed to continue, by us, the people, isn' t it going to be impossible for any President, no matter what party they are aligned with, to keep campaing promises or do whats best for everyone ?
The repective governments of this country, Fed, State, Local, County are all the same. If you don' t believe so , just take a look at what happens when any one of the governments mentioned, even think about cutting funding or even defund any agency, organization, entity . When funding or defunding are mentioned, all of a sudden the heads, power brokers of those organizations, appear at a gov't. meeting and throw their influence/weight around and ever gov' t official gets " jelly spined " and " shivers " to point of losing their shoes and gives in to the demands of the " heads, supposedly credible, influencial " power brokers/dictators " , stand up and say " Jawohl, mein Fuhrer! "
" and end up doing what the Fuhrer wants in the long run.
If you don' t thing it happens, just attend a local Commission meeting, after the threat of cutting funding or defunding a certain organization, that is headed up by a certain person or persons and see what happens.

booker,
I think they just manufacture form letters and spam all people who write to them. They have no intention of dealing with specifics we may ask about. We need to remember all this next election and vote every single office holder out.
Conservatives want to cut all spending. But they don't seem to understand that when over 40% of the people in the country don't pay taxes at all, then something's got to give. Loopholes are killing us. For example, huge loopholes are given to oil companies for stuff like yachts used for entertaining oil clients. Yet they want to cut benefits like Medicare and Social Security? This can't continue. Where is the balance?
I'd like to see them focus on two things: heavy cuts in the "free trade" area, and job growth for American people. One will lead to the other.
So many jobs are going overseas that the United States has become one big sow with rows of teats and every foreign country and big corporation is parked at our underbelly.
We Americans can help out by buying American made products too. We need to start manufacturing again in this country. We don't make anything, but we are sucking up stuff made in foreign countries like crazy. Look at electronics alone.
Anybody catch the Newt Gingrich story recently? He claims to be a great proponent of "buy American" but he was handing out t-shirts that were made in El Salvador.
So did our trade agreements in Central and South America keep people there employed and prevent them from crossing the border?
I'd also like the GOP to admit, just once, that the Bush era includes two wars that were put on credit. They never showed on his balance sheet.
I hope I'm within hearing distance of the next person who blames Obama for their not receiving their social security. I'll just politely invite him or her to go back to work and just request that their entitlements stop altogether since social security is a liberal idea to begin with. You can't have it both ways.

Who says that American politics/government/political system is the best in the world ?
Who says that when you vote, you are getting a government that represents " All of the People " ?
Answer: All of the wealthy/super wealthy individuals/corporations/businesses that are paying those who are elected to seats in the American Governmental system and are absolutely influencing American governmental policy/law making !
What other reason could there be for allowing the weathy/superwealthy to become even wealther and force the poor and middle class to pay for everything, while the wealthy and superwealthy barely pay for anything and the so called humanitarian donations that these wealthy/superwealthy make is, but a small pittance, compared to the taxes they would have to pay on all of their hidden income/wealth .
That"s who says that the present way, politics/politicalsystem/government is done, is the best in the world.
This whole, recent " Play " in D.C. has been like watching a " skit " on Saturday Night Live and similar to watching the rise of nazism in Europe in the 1930's. You know if you don' t comform to our partys way of thinking, " WE WILL CRUSH YOU " !

Auto responses from our reps are nothing new.
All of this "drama" is nothing but political gamesmanship. And we are the ones who will be hurt by it. And nothing will be done about it until the country reaches the melt down point.
(The same could be said for our city)
We have become such an entitled society, everyone wants their share and their programs no matter what happens to the nation as a whole.
I have also heard the president bashing at the V.A. clinics here in town and in Topeka from my fellow veterans. If it were not so sad, it would be amusing.
I for one am tired of the blame game. There is enough fault to lay at the base of each party. There is however, a boatload of blame to be laid at the feet of the press and it's pundits in explaining this to the public.
Medicare CUTS instead of adjustments.
S.S. CUTS, instead of adjustments.
Tax INCREASES instead of allowing tax breaks to expire.
All while ignoring the two wars we Americans don't seem to realize we are fighting.
So here is my first idea to start things off.
No one on the federal government payroll in Washington D.C. should be paid for the next month, or until our elected officials get their "act" together. NO ONE !

You're absolutely right, methusla. "All of the people" are pawns, especially right now when we common folk feel so threatened by this fiasco.
We are pawns to those politicians who refuse to compromise, Tea party first and foremost. This letter I received from Tim Huelscamp is a prime example when he claims to support bipartisanship yet blames Obama for the "spending spree" of bailouts. Some of those bailout packages came from the Bush administration too.
What a foolish thing for Huelscamp to say. Did he take a moment to think that bailouts saved jobs? For example, the CEO of General Motors spoke this morning on those bailouts. His company has since repaid 30 billion of the $50 billion received and continues to repay it.
The CEO spoke of the over one million jobs all over this country that were saved as a result of the bailouts GM received.
Did Huelscamp take one moment, one lousy moment to consider such a momentous thing as saving jobs? Did he think to take a moment to figure out what the FICA deductions were in those million jobs? Or payroll taxes for both federal and states? Bush too agreed that saving jobs was paramount in the bailouts. Both presidents worked together on the bailouts.
But Huelscamp blames Obama. Huelscamp needs a history lesson. Politicians that play partisan politics are dangerous to us all.

I'm just a dumb ole redneck from Kansas, but here are some of my ideas on this mess.
1. Bring our troops home now, not only from Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia, but start closing bases in other counties. Use the savings from this expense to begin a WPA type program to build up the countries power grids and infrastructure. Maybe a high speed rail system? Repaired roads and bridges? That would put the returning service members and many other unemployed people to work .
2. Social Security and Medicare, Medicaid HAVE TO be changed. EVERY actuary have said it is unsustainable as is. There has to be a change in the eligibility age and some form of means testing enacted. Not for people on the programs now, but for those who are 15 or more years from retiring.
Consider this: A month or two ago, our friend Steve Sauder, commented on his achieving medicare age status. Nothing against Mr. Sauder, but should millionaires and the more well off, receive the same benefits as a poor person who cannot afford them? Couldn't they pay a little more for their care?
3. Congress should pass no law for the country that does not also apply to themselves. No more special retirement or health programs.
4. Absolutely no more "earmark" bills allowed in either house of Congress.
5.Consider abolishing or slashing several federal agencies.
Department of Education?
Department of Commerce?
Department of Agriculture?
FDA?
Amtrak?
What works for you guys?

Both parties okay the NAFT act. That was the worst thing for Americans for all it did was send jobs South and I am not talking Texas or Alabama. Bring all troops home and stattion them on the borders and no one comes across. Any business that hires an Illegal does 10 years in jail.

I just heard several people interviewed on CNN Money. One of them was the founder and head of the Memphis Tea Party.
His idea to increase business revenue in this country is to GET RID OF OSHA, the American Disabilities Act, and other such programs that is tying the hands of American business. He is a businessman.
Sure. Let's return to the nineteenth century when the American worker was not protected in the workplace. Everyday, hundreds died because of workplace perils.
And let's not get the disabled back to work by providing them with workplace fixtures that will enable them to at least make a paycheck. Let's just make sure they stay in their basements and never see the light of day.
I can't believe the sob had the guts to say such a thing, especially right on TV at a time when people are fearing for their livlihoods.
Tea Party people are following this man and supporting his mad man ideas.
Why are people even working for him. Something tells me he's been sued for workplace violations and will use the political pulpit to get back at people. But no matter what his reasons, the Tea Party folks believe him and follow him.
This is nuts.

I like all your ideas, Steve, except the one about limiting social security to guys like Steve Sauder who already have more than they need. The trouble with that is that these guys have also paid into the system all their working lives. Gotta give 'em that. Maybe to limit their benefits according to their net incomes? I suppose that would encourage cheating on income taxes then.
Definitely no earmarks, or if any earmarks at all, an absolute limit according the the population of the state. I am recalling that stupid Stephens from Alaska and all the heavy earmarks he got year after year including his famous "bridge to nowhere." Guys like him put us in the poorhouse. Where is he today? Basking in his cabin in the Alaskan wilderness and collecting his lifetime pension. Suppose he cares about any of this?
Department of Commerce definitely needs to be slashed. What have they done to encourage jobs growth?
Education definitely needs to be pared down to a skeleton staff. All they do is argue with the states and promote ideas that don't work anyway.
Your best idea: Bring the troops home and put them to work in other areas that have much more significance to our own country than killing guys in a country that couldn't care less about us.
Finally, let me add another one to Steve's list. Stop or drastically cut foreign aid. Countries like Afghanistan aren't using it except for their leaders to squirrel it all away for themselves in Swiss banks. And this includes that fraudulent Pakistan who has all but admitted they were hiding Bin Laden for years.
Time to make America first.
If other countries have a severe catastrophe, we can help then. Otherwise, we must save all that foreign aid and keep it here at home in a special fund designed to only help for things like earthquakes and tsunamis.
Some say foreign aid helps our security in those dangerous areas of the world. If we have to pay for our own security like that, then let's invest in arming satellites.

An article in this mornings msnbc relates 10 signs of double dip recession. An interesting read if you care to look it up at
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43946055/...
If not, here's a recap:
1. Inflation --clothing, coffee, sugar, meat and other staples are up. (How far do your grocery dollars go lately?)
2. Investments yielding less -- The market has stumbled in last quarter. Gold faltering as well. (It began to revive a little, then down it went).
3. Auto industry -- purchasing is down as consumers worry about economy and oil prices. Easy to see there.
4. Oil --crude is above $100 a barrel and appears to be stuck there regardless of economy. Consumers not driving = slowdown in retail sector as well. (Didn't we say this around here when RDA keeps talking retail. Didn't many of us say that high gas prices prevent shopping).
5. Federal budget deficit signalling more cuts in federal and state and local jobs.
6. China's economy slows --demand BY Chinese consumers slows manufacturing, and export numbers fall. U.S. exports to China decline. (A good place to start a discussion).
7. Unemployment -- Jobless people curtail spending = more cash strapped state governments with demand for unemployment benefits. Many families are helping unemployed members and are curtailing their own spending as a result.
8. Debt ceiling -- need for higher taxes brought on by aging population. (Sorry all you no new taxes people, this is a fact of life and we've known this since the mid 1940's when the baby boom was going on. Why only now worry about it?)
9. Access to credit -- lack of access hurts individuals and business alike = concerns about risk and slow economy = banks want at least 20% down for home purchases = home construction jobs decrease.
10. Housing - the single largest drag on the economy. Total decline in home equity of over 60%. Mortgages underwater as values drop. Credit crisis develops. See #9.

I like all of Steve's ideas too, except the one you mentioned. As much as I hate the idea of claiming "entitlements," I kinda think I am "entitled" since I have paid into them for my entire adult life and will for many years to come.
And I DEFINITELY agree with the idea you added of cutting off foreign aid. We have no business giving out money to other countries until we get our own house in order.

Well, Golly Gee !
If you really want to see who or what faction has the reigns of power in the Federal Government, please read the following,
Super PAC-men: On Sunday, “Restore Our Future” -- the Super PAC supporting Romney -- reported it has raised $12.2 million dollars in the first six months of this year, NBC’s Garrett Haake reports. The Super PAC, which can accept unlimited donations, was funded exclusively by just 86 donors. There were four $1 million dollar donations, and no single donation was less than $2,500. Among the bold-faced names who wrote checks to the committee: members of the Marriott family (on whose board Romney sat until earlier this year), beer magnate August Busch III, and New York investor John Paulson, who was the only individual to write a $1 million check to the Super PAC. By the way, that $12.2 million haul is substantially larger than the $3 million-plus haul by the Democratic Super PAC supporting Obama, Priorities USA Action; its sister group, Priorities USA, brought in an additional $2 million.

These rich, wealthy " PARTY DONNERS " and the political partys and their politicians, they donate to or buy if you prefer, are the real enemies, terrorist threat to this Nation and its people .
Just how many of these wealthy donners do you suppose get all kinds of congressmen/women/congressional favors for their donations ?
If you had any doubt as to who has control of this Nation, I have just shown you who has the seat of power in the U.S. .

Our vice president is charging the secret service $2,200.00 a month for rent on a house he owns. I guess that's not too much considering it probably costs a million or more a month to protect him. There is no honor left in our government officials.

Steve,
Capitalism and free market right? So your telling me the VP should be punished for owning a rental property and renting it out? Point is someone is going to rent it out, and last I checked Biden was not a very wealthy member of congress. Folks over at Fox News would say talk like that is downright socialist.

goodoleboy,
No, No, No. That's not what I'm saying.
I'm saying if I were a SNL writer I would do a skit about this, and show the effects of budget cuts, by having secret service agents sleeping in pup tents on the front lawn of biden's house, complete with porta potties and campfires. Biden is currently single right? Maybe a scene with him snuggling with two armed agents in the bedroom? A secret service sleepover?
You are correct, I'm all for free market and capitalism. Heck, if I was Biden , the rent would be double for the government.
But I still think there is no honor left in (most of) our government officials.
Look at how they trotted out Gabby Gifford for the "historic" vote yesterday. Look at how the news media is gushing about that.
Free Market and Capitalism, I'm all for it.
If a business was run like the congress has been the last month, (years and decades) it would be broke.
Oh, wait!
The government is broke!
But let's hold a press conference and pat ourselves on the back for fixing this months debacle. Now let's get ready for the next election.

No Steve he is married, and I'll wager if it was not his rental, someone else would probably be charging more.
There are far more interesting skits for SNL to write but I'll let the free market decide whether they thank those skits are funny.I figure since SNL has been around over 30 years now they know what is and what is not.

goodoleboy,
Just why do you think Mrs. Gifford was shot in the head?
It wasn't a random shooting, was it?
It was because she was a congresswoman and some "NUT" with not much to lose felt the need voice his frustration in his government with violence.
It was horrible, despicable, terrible, and a lot more. His act ended the lives of several people and affected a whole lot more adversely.
We can't understand why he thought this act was his only option. Rational people wouldn't think that way. There are a lot more nuts out there.
My point was that Mrs. Gifford has actually done something since her shooting. She has fought the tough fight of recovery. I am happy she was able to cast her vote for this bill. And I hope her recovery is fast and complete.
I still think the congress and news media used her return to give us all a
"feel good moment"
about our hard working elected officials.
And that kinda pisses me off.
As always, JMO and I know you don't have to agree or disagree.

What's wrong with gushing about Mrs. Gifford? Your comment suggests that her appearance yesterday was planned and therefore crass. I don't believe it.
Whether or not it was a feigned "feel good moment," considering what that poor woman has been through, I applaud her gutsiness for appearing yesterday. A few months ago she couldn't even hold up her hand let along cast a vote. Wow, Steve. That's low. Flatout crappy in fact.
Another turd in the punchbowl. Wow.

You can't go to war and put it on a charge card. This economy is the Bush/Cheney legacy come to pass.
On top of all that, now in Iraq, billions of dollars are missing and Iraqi fraud is suspected. Journalists call it "my turn to eat" where whoever is in charge gets to "feed" all their family members with what the U.S. sends them. Your foreign aid dollars at work.
Just one more country sucking off the American teat. Damn, we need to come home and forget all these foreign pigs.
U.S. Congress needs to busy themselves with two things. Jobs for American people, and investigating fraud, both overseas and here at home. Medicare fraud for example. Prison sentences or death for all.
I am sick of people getting away with fraud and not getting their asses kicked for it.
