Kellogg Plaza & Lofts moving forward

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

Construction has started Kellogg Plaza & Lofts, which will be located in the 1100 block of Commercial Street.

Corey Haag, one of the developers, said the concrete slab for the building has been poured and has to cure for about a week. Following curing of the concrete, the site will be ready to frame.

“It will probably take a couple of months to frame,” Haag said.

After that, the brick workers can come in and start bricking, Haag added.

“We’re hoping if weather permits to be done around the Jan. 1 time frame,” Haag said.

The building will be a combination of loft apartments and retail. It will have 11 units. Some of the units will be 700 square feet and others will be 525 square feet. There will be one ADA unit and it will be 600 square feet.

Haag said he has a 700 square-foot retail space available for lease and a 1,400-square foot retail space. The proposed 10,000 square foot, three-story building will face Commercial Street.

Haag said a couple of the lofts have been leased already, and the others are still open.

There will be a large parking lot behind the building with 24 to 25 parking spaces and the potential of angled parking stalls in front of the building, which will increase the number of parking spaces as well.

The building will be named after Lyman Kellogg, the original president of Emporia State University, then known as the Kansas State Normal School.

Kellogg first came to Emporia to be the first president of the university and then later practiced law in Emporia. At one time he owned some of the property that the new building will stand on.

Haag is one of several developers of the property. Jim and Mary Shepherd, Craig and Joyce French and Harry and Barb Haag are the other developers.

Haag said he is always looking for public input on projects such as the Kellogg Plaza & Lofts. He can be reached at coreyhhaag@yahoo.com.

Several site improvements have to be made to the alley and the site. Haag said he is working with the City of Emporia to prep and re-do the alley.

“We’re wanting to have that done by winter and have it reconstructed and paved,” Haag said.
