IT’S LESS THAN three weeks to the Lyon County Fair and this year also will serve as the anniversary of a tragic event that occurred during last year’s fair.
Hannah Deaver, 17, of Shawnee, was killed in a tragic accident during the annual Mud-A-Thon. She, along with another 17-year-old from Allen, were seated in the bed of a pickup watching the event. A competitor’s vehicle came out of the pit after making a run, drove through the guard rail, went airborne and struck the pickup the girls were sitting in. Deaver was transferred to the hospital where she was prounounced dead.
We urge those attending the fair to not forget Hannah and her family. While many will be enjoying the fair, the event will be a painful reminder for the family and friends of Hannah. We urge those to take a moment and keep Hannah’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.
Furthermore, we urge the Lyon County Fair Board to assess events further and take necessary precautions to prevent another tragedy. While tragedies at the fair aren’t common, this one happened and we hope and pray another accident such as this will not happen again.
So, while enjoying some cotton candy, a ride on the Ferris wheel or a grandstand event, please take the time to not only remember Hannah’s family, but also to take the necessary personal precautions to stay safe during the fair.
