Jaguar girls fall in tourney

Ashley Romig had a big day Monday and proved to be too much for Hartford. The sophomore for Waverly led all scorers with 22 points in her team’s 49-38 win in opening round action of the Lyon County League tournament.

The Bulldogs started out slowly, scoring five points in the first quarter and leading 5-4 after the first eight minutes. Romig then scored 11 of her team’s 19 points in the second quarter and the Bulldogs went into halftime with a 24-20 lead. Waverly then outscored the Jaguars 9-7 in the third quarter and put up 16 points in the fourth quarter to finish the game.

Mikayla Wilson and Ashley Preeo each broke into double figures for Hartford, with Wilson scoring 13 points and Preeo 10.

With the win, Waverly will face Southern Coffey County in a semifinal matchup at 4 p.m. Friday. The seventh-seeded Jaguars will face third-seed Madison in a consolation bracket game at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Burlingame 40, Southern Coffey County 28

A third-quarter drought hurt Southern Coffey County in its loss to Burlingame Monday in the opening round of the Lyon County League tournament. After being ahead 19-14 at halftime, the Titans managed just one point in the third quarter. By contrast, the Bearcats scored 13 points and took a 27-20 lead into the fourth quarter en route to a 12-point win.

Travis Bryan was the only player to crack double figures for SCC, scoring 11 points. Burlingame’s Ty Lang led all scorers with 14 points.

With the win, third-seed Burlingame will play Olpe in a semifinal matchup at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Sixth-seed SCC will play Hartford in a consolation game at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
