Myers wants back on city commission

Friday, January 21, 2011

After four years being away from the Emporia City Commission, Tom Myers is seeking to jump back in.

Myers became the eighth city commission candidate when he filed to run Friday.

Myers served on the commission for 14 years. He was mayor twice and was often a player on social issues such as domestic violence and housing standards. A proposal of his eventually became the city’s first minimum rental housing code.

Myers finished fourth in the 2007 election behind current commissioners Bobbie Agelr and Kevin Nelson and Jeff Longbine, who resigned from the commission in November.

Agler is one of the seven of Myers opponents this time around, gunning for three empty seats. The other candidates are Christian Keisler, an Emporia State communication major; Rob Gilligan, sales director for Emporia Marketplace.com; Jenell Tebbetts, a salesperson for Genesis Health Club; Helen Hill, former owner of Hills Appliance Center; Jack Oglesby II, a retired teacher; and Bobbi Mlynar, a retired journalist.

I THINK THE REASON HE WAS DEFEATED LAST TIME IS WHEN HE WENT UP AGAINST RETAIL DEVELOPMENT.

It appears to me that a number of these people that don't even own rental property want to expand government and oppress the property owners with police state actions. The rental market is soft right now and I have noticed many landlords fixing up their properties to be more competitive in the market place and I admit some of these places are the pits but, how do you put a fine and possible fourclouser on a 94 year old on limited income and let me say this, once they start on income properties as a little money maker, they will go next to your own home. In 2009 there were 158 fourclousers and 137 in 2010. THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE BUT THEY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHO REALLY OWNED A LOT OF THESE MORTGAGES. 2011 WILL BE THE WORST. THIS IS NO TIME TO ELECT A BUNCH OF PEOPLE THAT WILL MAKE A BAD SITUATION WORSE....For the elite of EMPORIA who have money on the sidelines, this will be a golden oppourunity. This should be a campaign issue along with tax abatements for retail development. This Commission may very well decide if Lowes goes in on 24th as I don't think they will be able to make the deadline for start of development. As you can see, the future is up for grabs so if your concerned, please run or encourage someone .

hey tom meyers, a lot of folks here in the city remember how you were all for the STINKING SOMALIONS, and you also stated in the gazette how you wanted the city to provide an area within the city so that they could set up shop's and everyone within the city would come and support them, and then tom, remember the day you went to eat dinner with all the others who loved them so much?? what a phony show you all put on that day. And tom, do you remember how you were wanting their support to get on the city commission? even placing signs in front of their stinking resturant? how did that all work out for you tom?? yea, tom you aint getting my vote, and I do hope a lot of others remember your past
