Acclaimed documentary to have screening in Emporia

A documentary looking at the philosophical shift of Kansas from a populist-minded Democratic state to a staunchly conservative Republican state will have a free showing in Emporia followed by a question-and-answer session with the filmmaker.
The movie, “What’s the Matter with Kansas?,” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at the historic Granada Theatre, 807 Commercial St., in Emporia. Filmmaker Joe Winston will answer questions and discuss the film after the screening.
Winston’s film, which was released in 2009, follows the 2004 book by Thomas Frank titled “What’s the Matter with Kansas? How Conservatives Won the Heart of America.”
Movie critic Roger Ebert named the film “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” one of the 10 best documentaries of 2009. Said Ebert, “I’ve rarely seen a documentary quite like it. It has a point to make but no ax to grind. It doesn’t connect the dots, nor does it need to. It takes no cheap shots. It is all there to see.”
Much of the film was shot in the Wichita area and includes outspoken pastor the Rev. Terry Fox and members of his congregation along with the then-president of the Kansas Farmers Union who testifies before Congress about global warming.
For those wanting some background before the movie is shown, the Emporia Public Library is host for a discussion of Frank’s book “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” The discussion will be at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 2 in the large meeting room of the library, 110 E. Sixth Ave. The free discussion will be led by Emporia State professors Rob Catlett and Michael Smith.
Additional copies of the book were purchased with funds from the Friends of the Library and are available for check-out at the library. The library’s 2011 book discussion series is planned around celebrating Kansas’ sesquicentennial. For information about the series, contact Lynette Olson at olsonlyn@emporialibrary.org.
The title of both the movie and book are a nod to Emporia’s own William Allen White, Pulitzer Prize-winning editor of The Emporia Gazette, who wrote an editorial of the same name in 1896 as the Populist movement was trying to gain political control.
The Emporia screening is co-sponsored by the Department of Social Sciences and William Allen White Library at Emporia State University, Emporia Public Library and Flint Hills Technical College.

This book says Emporia has a decaying downtown but, I think Downtown Emporia is making some real good progress and the author says no one knowa who William Allen White is. Just a few years ago he was voted the most influentical Kansasn. He spent 2 hours in Emporia and went to the poor section of town and made a judgement and every town has it's poor area. I wonder if those stones were in place, maybe a better projection would have happened. It's hard to get a second chance to make a first impression.

You know reddog, a.k.a. K.B. Thomas Jr., sitting on my " FRONT PORCH ", I don' t quite see things the same way that those in the more affulent parts of Emporia see them !
You see, I don' t quite see Emporia going in the direction it should be going, given the present state of things and apparently you see things in a somewhat paranoid dillusional universe, all your own !
And the " AFFLUENT " I mentioned in my first paragraph, also see things from their " POWER OBSESSED " front porches in a totally different " LIGHT "and seek only " POWER, SUBJUGATION, ADVANTAGE/BENEFITS " only for them and " SELF NOTERIETY " !
Also are you saying that the " POOR " sections of any City do not matter in the scheme of things and should just be " BYPASSED " or ignored or shunned as if those living in the " POORER " sections of a City do not matter or count for anything ?
FYI, those who are not among the " WEALTHY/WELLTODO/AFFLUENT " class are a much larger section of the population than the wealthy/welltodo/affluent and should be treated as " EQUAL HUMAN BEINGS ", to anyone !!!

Oh, and by the way, W.A.W. was an affluent Emporian, that took the time to at least visit the " poorer " Emporia, even though at that time the area of Emporia that he lived in was considered to be the more affluent part of Emporia !!!

I disagree with Emporia calling itself the "Front Porch of the Flint Hills." A front porch is something that is inviting. A location to greet visitors. A place to sit and relax. I live in the hills and Emporia is where we go to by groceries or supplies. "Pantry of the Flint Hills" would be a more accurate description of Emporia.

I received the book as a Christmas gift. Too bad I'll be working during the screening. It really is astonishing that good honest working people can get so wrapped up in social wedge issues that they lose sight of kitchen table issues.

METHUSLA, I was talking more about his two hour study of Emporia. He said that a government official told him he never heard of William Allen White and that discreadits the book. Don't blame the poor area's in Emporia on the Conservatives---go to Detroit and see what has happened to that city and all those progressive liberal ideas. Good Day

William Allen White was the spokesman for grass roots America but, he also was a charter member of the Rockefeller Foundation and helped to split the Republician Party which helped Wilson to become President and sign the bill to establish The Federal Reserve which is a private organization which the Rockefellers have ownership. William Allen White was both adirector and trustee will into the 1930's. If someone was able to research his notes about the Rockefellers, this could be a best sellor. I have always wondered if there is a book by William Allen White concerning the Rockefeller's that is locked up to be printed 100 years after his death in 1944. Maybe someone would write a novel and use Gary Allen"s book on the Rockefeller's as a sourse along with Carroll Quiggley book Tradgey and Hope. The Creature from Jeckel Island would spin the yarn even more. Add in The Money Masters and the Fall of the Republic and Mr. there is a book you won't want to lay down. THIS WOULD BE A GOOD RESEARCH PAPER FOR A DOCTOR'S DEGREE AND THIS IS KB THOMAS JR. ROUND'N THIRD AND HEAD'N HOME---SEE YOU ALL.

William Allen White was bigger than life and stranger than fiction. While many biographies have told about the newspaper man from Emporia,Kansas no one has explained or researched his relationship with the Rockefeelers and the New World Order.

Another good book would be The Rockefeeler Boys from Emporia,Kansas. Another less famous person was Veron L. Kellogg who's father was the first President at the Norma School which is now Emporia State University. Veron L. Kelloogg was also a charter member of the Rockefeeler Foundation and while teaching at Stanford, one of his students was Herbert Hoover who later before he became President sent Vernon Kellogg to Germany to investigate Eugenics which was his vocation. He wrote a book called Headquarters Night's. This book was about conversations and experiences at the headquarters of the Germany army in France and Belgium[1917] He was an eugenics expert and wrote the book to warn Americans that Germany was taking eugenics to the max. Teddy Roosevelt wrote the introduction and he said 'the man who reads Kellogg's sketch and fails to understand why we are at war and why we must accept no peace except overwhelming victory is neither a good American nor a lover of mankind."

Why not just go there, set up a digital camera, then and beach at the filmmaker? Invite your favorite shock radio talk show hosts too! That would make for an interesting viral video on the internet. You might even become famous world wide.

The following article regarding William Allen White appeared in the NY Times. Perhaps this is the sort of thing which caused people to think of him as a socialist. Unfortunately, the article has a ton of information on the other man who was appointed to this group, but not much on White himself. However, it seems as if the article has planted a few seeds. See if you agree.
On another area, White had written an editorial against the proponents of the "Red Scare." However, in retrospect, I would agree with him considering what Joe McCarthy did to this country.

I believe that since William Allen White was a director and trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation that he had one foot in the bank and the other foot in the Socialist movement. He backed FDR'S socialist policies although he said he never voted for him.
