Two more local residents have filed for the Emporia City Commission, bringing the total number to seven.
Jack Oglesby II, a retired teacher and part-owner of Planet Sub, has entered the race. Oglesby taught government and social sciences for 30 years at Olpe High School.
Though he grew up in Topeka and Lawrence, Oglesby has lived in Emporia off and on since 1978. He once unsuccessful ran for the state legislature while living in the Leavenworth area.
“Because it’s a subject area I’ve taught, I’ve thought about running before but I did not have the available time,” he said.
Bobbi Mlynar, a former editor and reporter for The Emporia Gazette, also is running. Mlynar first started at the Gazette as a keypunch operator in 1963. After a long and distinguished journalism career she retired from the newspaper in July.
Helen Hill, former owner of Hills Appliance Center, filed to run earlier this week.
The other candidates are commissioner Bobbie Agler; Christian Keisler, an Emporia State communication major; Rob Gilligan, sales director for Emporia Marketplace.com; and Jenell Tebbetts, a salesperson for Genesis Health Club.

I guarantee after the monument fiasco that there will be a lot more of us at the polls this year, even if I have to make a special trip back while I am working I will be there to cast mine.

Is there another candidate waiting to file that was all for these stones? A real estate agent maybe?
neighbor, while I like Helen Hill and her humor, we have enough clowns running things now. So I will be listening to her and the other candidates ideas and thoughts and voting accordingly. We need to stop voting personality and start voting facts.

We don't need any Real Estate Agents on this Commission because there are to many conflicts of interest.

Especially in my case where my family, relatives and clients have numerious Real Estate holdings...And unlike other folks that want to control Emporia's destiny, I prefer to be a watchdog and a spokeman for individual property rights, no matter where you live.

OMG, this is fantastic.
Jack Oglesby is highly intelligent, and what a thinker when it comes to logically looking at government business. He is such a promising candidate.
And Bobbi Mlynar too? We couldn't ask for more.
These are down to earth thinking people.
This is going to be tremendous.

Still wish more were younger. All we have are old men on the commission.

emporiahelper, we have older men on the commission with the exception on Johnson. If you looked closely, the men routinely ignore or talk over her comments. This was especially evident in the conversation on city employee health insurance. I'm hoping Bobbi makes it for her common sense. I agree with Steve on Helen; I like her personally but I'll hold my opinion on her political abilities for now. Male/female - I don't care, just give me some good choices to vote for.
