Endorsement- School Superintendent

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Typically we give endorsements for elections, but today we are giving our endorsement for the USD 253 superintendent position.

Over the last month the Kansas Association of School Boards conducted a superintendent search and forwarded four candidates for consideration to the board of education. On Monday one candidate pulled out so that leaves three possibilities.

This week the candidates have been going before the school board for their interviews.

One of the candidates, who will be introduced Thurs., is Theresa Davidson. Davidson is currently serving as the interim-superintendent, and we have been impressed with her work.

Davidson brings to the office some serious experience spanning more than 30 years.

She has been a middle school and high school principal of 5A and 6A schools. She was named Kansas Principal of the Year. She knows budgets because she has been the assistant superintendent for business for USD 253. She knows the personnel side because she has been the associate superintendent for personnel for Emporia.

Having served our district as assistant superintendent for business she knows our budget inside out and that will become extremely important in the coming years. The governor has slashed education spending this year and it will take an experienced leader to navigate these tough financial times.

Davidson has been transparent with the community working through changes. She has been involved with the district socially since she spends most evenings and weekends attending school events.

The best thing about Davidson is she is someone with a connection to our community, with experience and knowledge to move this district forward. As interim she has been doing the job well.

Some may think a candidate needs to come from out of town, but we believe the best candidate is already here doing the job.

Actually the governor has NOT SLASHED spending. He has proposed a cut in spending, something long overdue. Whoever the board picks, they should be paid less than the current salary being paid.

IT IS AFTER ALL, FOR THE CHILDREN.

Theresa, Would you do the job for 90K a year?

link coming next; Read last sentence.

“Prior to the Supreme Court order we had some fairly lean years where funding was inappropriately low,” Anderson told Kansas Liberty. “The last three years we have seen mandated increases in funding and the teacher salaries have been improving. But then when you look at purchasing power and the consumer price index and the inflation factor the increase for salaries is almost inconsequential.”

According to a recent University of Kansas study, however, the increased funding has not improved test results of the state's students.

The only people reaping the bennies are administrative employees. Look at these wages and remember they are for Kansas, where the cost of living used to be low.

It would work to hire her, then do away with her job and that would save probably 100k and this is for the children.

I remember a time when people working in the school system were admired for sacrificing a better paying job to work with children. What happened?

Any one mad enough to run for school board? It is time for the board to make the decisions on budgets and MAKE the superintendent follow their lead.

I heard that Dodge City got 300,000 extra and when the people found out that it went to the administrative people, there was quite a rusgus. Peggy Mast made note of it on the KVOE BLOG.

I am agreeing with Mr. Walker. Theresa Davidson would be an excellent superintendent. She works hard to make improvements for our district. If only the public were allowed to vote...
