Emporia is within about 100 miles of 80 % of the population of Kansas and therefor I visualize a Casino just off the South Roundabout.

1. What do you think Emporia will look like in ten years? (More or less retail, More or less population, better off then than now, etc
Ten years is a long time and there are so many variables, it's hard to say what Emporia will look like in 10 years, so I will answer the three parts specifically mentioned.
Retail. Ok, again with retail, retail, retail. Retail will continue to fail until we are able to attract well-paying jobs to replace the thousands that have been lost over the last decade. That should be obvious. If the population can't earn a living wage to pay for their basic necessities, they are not going to have money left over to spend on 'retail'. Therefore, the vast majority of new retail will fail.
More or less population? Also depends on the jobs. The population will follow economic opportunity. If we have no good jobs here, the population will go where they can make a living. It's already happening. If something isn't done to bring jobs here (REAL jobs...not minimum wage retail jobs), the trend will continue.
Better off now or then? Depends. More job opportunities = population better off.
2. What will Emporia need to do have bright future?
Jobs. Good jobs. And lots of them. Jobs that pay a minimum of $10 per hour.
3.What will your organization or business look like in ten years? Bigger or smaller. What will be the keys to your success. How can the community help you?
Does not apply.
1. Any final thoughts?
I (and several of my friends) are planning to leave Emporia. It's a great town. Wonderful place to raise a family. But I'm being taxed to death...and the taxes keep going up. There are no jobs here for my children when they grow up. I'd love to stay here, but I owe it to my children to offer them the opportunity to prosper. If we stay, I'm offering them poverty.

Emporia should quit building crap that they believe will attract city folk and realize that what attracts city folk is what we already have.
Advertise vacation home building lots and sell them the south side of Emporia. Let them build their vacation home on the lot and tax them.
Quit drooling over production plants with low skill labor. These operations demand huge subsidies, bring crime and heavy truck traffic. We already have enough people who need free lunches at our schools.
Promote the college, parks, scenery, biking, hiking, and the get away from it all atmosphere that we already have. That's what people from the city want. A place to relax.

Looks like you all for got that the world as we know it will come to an end on 12/23/2012.
If not then Emporia will again have parking meters installed, in an attempt to calm the riots between the business and the 17 shoppers in the downtown area.

The city should take a good look at how hard it is to get a building permit. This is worst place I've ever been when it comes to abiding by the stringent building codes.
It doesn't take long to figure out why people don't build here once you've been through the process.

The city should go look at the "Goose shoot Saturday" link and read the comments. It isn't hard to see why Emporia has a hard time attracting business. We have everything it takes to be attractive to tourists. The only thing that holds us back is our attitudes. I though I saw a sign at the entrance of our town that says we're building an Inclusive Community. Wonder if the people living here know what that means. Got a long ways to go it seems.
